Hi, I got this part worn tyre last week, and noticed it was flat today.
Could this be a puncture of my making ? or is it more likely to have been there from before (it seems like there's yellow markings around the hole)
I'm deciding whether to bring it back, or just bite the bullet and pay £60 for a new one.
Many Thanks
Liam

Involve Trading Standards. There are regulations to protect the customer

www.tyresafe.org/part-worn-tyres/part-worn-tyres-a.../

Very rarely do sellers comply with no. 4.

But why put yourself, your family and others at risk by buying unknown used tyres when new, mid range tyres are not that expensive and will last many times longer than a used one.

They are simply not economic even if they are cheaper.

Ford Galaxy 2004 1.9 - Part Worn Tyre . holey moley ! - bathtub tom

It looks like there's a bulge at the site of the previous puncture repair and as such should never have been repaired and sold - I reckon it's dangerous!

This will just bring out the 'never buy used tyres' brigade, who happily ignore the fact that every car they've ever bought is on used tyres (unless they have new ones fitted before driving off).

Ford Galaxy 2004 1.9 - Part Worn Tyre . holey moley ! - edlithgow

The OP has presumably addressed the new/used decision for his original purchase, so we don't need to revisit it unless he wants to.

Premature to invoke Trading Standards. Just swap it.

The trader likely pays buttons for his tyre supply so it won't be much skin off his nose.

Maybe ask to have a better look at the replacement though.

OP, re putting "others at risk", since I'm in The Yook at the moment, I hereby absolve you of any additional risk to me (as a pedestrian or bus/hire car occupant) through your use of part worn tyres.

If you visit Taiwan next year I will of course expect you to extend me the same reciprocal absolution.

I suspect the trader pays nothing! I've seen a 'thick twit' type van pull up to one of these used tyre places and unload a whole lot of tyres. I suspect they've been taken off other cars to fit new tyres, or the poor, ususpecting motorist has been told "can't repair that puncture". Meanwhile the previous owner has paid a 'disposal fee' for the old tyres.

I refuse to pay the disposal fee, but have my old tyres put in the boot and stop on the way home to dump them in the local tidy tip - legitimately.

The main source of part-worn tyres is Germany where a combination of their local tread depth laws and general attitude of car owners is to replace tyres at about 4mm - these find a ready market in the UK.

Most council tips (recycling facilities) make a charge to dispose of tyres and wheels with tyres.

I believe they also, BY LAW, have to replace tyres as a full matched set, which could result in very low wear used tyres coming onto the market

In Taiwan they are used by local farmers to support beehives, (and breed mosquitos) so that's where mine have gone.

I suppose silage clamps would be the UK equivalent, plus there is a big pile of them in the local (Dalry, Edinburgh) primary school playground

Been years since I saw a silage clamp in the UK, I believe they were banned, something to do with pollution of water courses caused by the run-off.

Ah. Thanks for the update. Primary school probably has limited capacity, but I’m unlikely to need to dispose of a tyre in The Yook anyway. Thought of cutting them up for tyre covers, recovery mats etc in Taiwan but so far havet tried it

Thanks all I brought it back today and he swapped it over.

When looking inside the tyre there was a patch inside 4 in by 3 in, that was glaringly obvious How he missed it when he put the tyre on is beyond me

Only issue is it's a 93 h with my galaxy it needs to be a 95 plus

So now you have replacement tyre that is not suitable for the car.

Trust you are going back again to get it replaced with one that is legal and meets (or exceeds) Mr Fords original specs. Anything else will possibly negate your insurance in the event of an accident and other potential issues.

You mean your replacement replacement tyre is the wrong tyre?

If so that is a bit of an issue. You might get a bit more push-back swapping it again, though you could reasonably argue he is supposed to be "the expert" so should be flogging you the right thing without you having to check

Good luck with the replacement replacement tyre's replacement..

You can't knock a feller for trying to save a few quid these days, yes i've had to buy part worns when short of money in the past (though i knew a fair bit about tyres from my first jobs), have an aversion to borrowing money which was brought to a head by my first mrs who thought she was the govt, ie borrow and spend like a drunken sailor because some other schmuck is picking up the tab, in my case me = mug.

You can see from the outer damage to the first tyre that there was mutiple breakages of the steel bandings, probably a bolt or similar object pierced and likely stayed in place for several weeks before the tyre was replaced, it should not have been repaired.

Going to be an awkward second visit Liam, ideally you would have spotted the too low load rating on the replacement and stopped it being fitted.

The only advice i can offer is when going to a used tyre site to take a torch and make a thorough inspection of the tyre yourself, do not rely on what they tell you, they are like politicians, tell you what you want to hear. Look not only for damage, repaired of a fashion or otherwise and check for perishing and cracking and especially look hard inside, look for creases that might repeat, i don't mean mould marks but actualy evidence of creasing which almost always points at the tyre being run flat or almost flat, reject it immediately.

Ford Galaxy 2004 1.9 - Part Worn Tyre . holey moley ! - bathtub tom

I'd add to GB's advice, check the date code on the tyre. I'd reject anything over five years old.

Thanks again :)
from now on in, I'll be getting new tyres,
the difference between the part worn at £30 to £35 fitted
and new at £60 fitted,
doesn't make it worth it for the drama,
nor the luck of finding a good part worn tyre place.
Thanks all
Liam
ps good to see some old friends replying :)

In the DT some 6/9 months ago was the obituary for a Devon millionaire. He had extensive business interests over some 40+ years. His "starter company" that made his first fortune was importing part worn tyres from Germany.

40 years of container loads of tyres that he brought into the UK - sold to dealers all over the UK. The tyres cost him very little/ free as the German tyre dealers did not have to pay for disposal/recycling. His major cost was transport from Germany.

Ford Galaxy 2004 1.9 - Part Worn Tyre . holey moley ! - skidpan

In 2010 we fitted 4 new tyres to the C-Max. The rears were the 5 year old original Continentals with about 50,000 miles on, no repairs and about 2mm tread and the fronts 2 year old Pirellis, about 20,000 miles, no repairs and about 3mm tread. The rears went for disposal based on b***** all tread and age but I thought that the fronts might do someone a favour for about 5000 miles (based on the previous rate of wear) so brought them home (and avoided paying the disposal fee).

Put them on e-bay, starting price £1, collection only. Popular size, 205 55 16.

Bidders went mad on them, sold for about £35 the pair (I expected about £10 at best but £1 would have been better than paying disposal) and the buyer had to send a courier for them since he was about 140 miles away.

Next thing I knew I got a message from the buyer wanting a refund since the tyres had little life left. I replied pointing out to him the accurate description I had posted and photo's showing a vernier measuring the tread. He opened a case against me.

I won the case but never again would I bother. People are simply stupid, trying to scam the seller or not worth helping.

Last time I bought a part worn, the fitter put it on the wrong way. The car got an advisory for it as well as being at the legal limit.

Wrong way around happened on the GF's Altis too.

Those were brand new (directional) Continentals, though.

Perhaps this couldn't happen in The Yook, but I wouldn't personally bet on it.

In Taiwan I got to be the troublemaking foreigner, again (a role I rather enjoy) by

(a) checking it, which your average Taiwanese punter probably wouldn't do, and apparently not all UK punters neither

(b) Insisting it went back for refit and rebalance.

I am non-harmonious sometimes..

Decades ago I had a couple of new tyres put on a Cortina GT. Checking the pressures the next day, I noticed 'tube type' on the sidewall, I was looking at a tubeless valve. Tyre fitters said it didn't matter. Trading standards had a different opinion.

I refused to trust the original fitters with the right tyres and negotiated with trading standards to have new tyres fitted elsewhere and a full refund. Of course, it took a few days to source the correct tyres and I had fun hooning around on them. Let's say there weren't any moulding pips visible when they came off!
