My understanding is that if the insurer pays out due to a write off there is no risk to insure against so the policy terminates automatically.

If you pay the premium in instalments then you've got a credit agreement as well as a policy. So yes the policy is over but you still have a live credit agreement and need to continue the payments. Imo that is.

Nor the possibility that you might make a second claim in that year. There is also the possibility that, even if 'written off', the owner may choose to retain the car and have it repaired, so the policy need not terminate.

Not necessarily. When my Skoda Roomster was written off as beyond economic repair the policy was left in abeyance and a week or so later I added the replacement Fabia.

The point, from reading my LV terms and conditions is that "In the event of a claim" the company reserve the right to pay the claim and then terminate the insurance policy.

On the topic of insurance write-offs, I presume that if Fire and Rescue indulge in their popular pastime of cutting the roof off even slightly damaged cars, the driver (with whiplash or whatever) has "write-off" on his record though the initial bump could have been repairable?
