Hi

I have all weather tyres on my car but two are now at 4 mm (so need changing). My garage are struggling to get hold of the same tyres but I could probably find some online. My question is are other tyres compatible and how can I check this?

I wondered if I should be considering replacing all 4 despite 2 having around 7 mm on them as they also show very very minor cracks. Garage didn't see this as a problem but they've lasted 3 years. Any advice?

The last time I changed tyres on the garages advice I went to a tyre shop and they lad was confused that I was changing tyres with 4 mm of tread left. He kept asking if I was sure I wanted to dispose of them. He then went and spoke with another young lad and they started howling with laughter and proceeded to roll the tyres into the boot of their car ...

I'd follow the tyre fitter's advice re the cracks, if they don't feel they are bad enough to want to sell you tyres then they are probably OK. If the tyre fitters' also does MOTs then they are probably trustworthy

I too have a car with less common tyre sizes, I always buy online including fitting. The tyres are sent to a local fitter (which you select when ordering) and they fit your tyres at no extra charge (it's included in the online price).

Never had a problem, and it allows you to choose exactly the tyres you want and not be limited by local stock availability or whatever the fitter's supplier can offer.

If you are in any doubt particularly with a safety component of your car then you should seek professional advice. Nobody can diagnose over the web, even a photo might not tell the whole story. It sounds like the garage do not have any concerns so in that position I wouldn't either if it was my car.

?? Tyres only legally 'need' changing when they are at 1.6mm across the central 3/4.

Personally, I try to swap tyres around so they wear equally, so I would put the 7mm ones on the front and the 4mm ones on the rear, thus giving many more thousands of miles service...and be prepared for flak from the 'best on the rear' brigade.

Me too. With that amount of tread (presumably all-round and even) there is no purpose in lashing out ££'00's - unless you intend to spend time on a full-on race track, on a wet day.

The tyres with the most tread are at the front. The garage said that all weather tyres should be changed at 4 mm same as winter tyres?

To paraphrase Mandy Rice-Davies, "they would say that wouldn't they".

If you're expecting to use them mainly on snow, then certainly replace them at 4mm. Otherwise it's your money you're throwing away for the tyre fitters to flog off your old tyres to these 'used tyre' places

If a new tyre has 8mm of tread, then you'll get around 50% more miles out of them if you replace them at 2mm than you would by replacing them at 4mm.

Myself and, undoubtedly, the majority of folk on this forum manage more than adequately on Summer tyres all year round.

I trust your legs are still the same length as each other.

The garage is talking utter bunk, more likely they want to see you some tyres. IMHO service outlets also charge a BIG mark-up for tyres - mine wanted £85 (fitted) a corner for tyres that I actually sourced (from a reputable online retailer, incl. delivery) for £52 each, and (ironically) my service agent charged just £10 each for fitting, so I was quids in to the tune of £92 overall.

The legal minimum is less than half that, but most often tyres should be changed because of their condition - damage, especially to the sidewall, significant cracking, which is often due to age (newer designed quality tyres should last longer than ones from 10 years ago) or the ageing effect of the car sitting in the sun a lot, as well as just wear - which includes significant uneven wear caused by under/over inflation and/or tracking/alingment issues.

The moral of the story here is to have your tyre rotated (most service agent will do this FOC at the service). With directional tyres (which most all season ones are nowadays [your may not be though] - my Michelin CC+ are), all you can do without completely refitting the tyre to the hub is swap the fronts to the rear (but staying on the same side).

As long as the wear is relatively even (some cars have inherrant problems with this even where the tracking is ok) across the width of the tyre (see above for why it may not be), then doing this should extend the life of your tyres overall by a minimum of 50% if not 100%.

Keeping the wear even is a must if the car is a 4WD one, as the system will not work well (and may stop working) if the wear difference is more than (if I recall) about 2-3mm between fronts/rears.

There are industry recommendations to replace winter tyres at 4mm and summer tyres at 3mm because aquaplaning resistance reduces substantially below those levels - but the legal limit remains at 1.6mm.

I use All-Seasons but I've not heard a specific recommendation for them so I work on 4mm in winter and 3mm in summer - they get replaced in the autumn when they're down to 3mm.

There is some logic behind the 4mm limit. For all weathers to count as winter tyres (or winter tyres for that matter) in at least Austria they must have at least 4mm of tread by law. If you are thus travelling abroad for a skiing holiday it may be worth changing them. For UK only use, changing at 4mm is probably too soon unless you need the winter performance for where you live.

I have clarified with the garage who have said it's a non-urgent advisory so will likely be okay for several thousand more miles with sensible driving and being mindful of conditions.

I may change all four tyres to regular ones in summer. Was thinking Goodyear Eagle F1 and save the two good all weather as spares. Not sure they would be compatible with F1s hence changing all four. Hopefully these should last longer?

True, and I suspect dewer-designs mean the drop-off in perfomance in bad weather is a lot less than it used to be.

One of the reasons I went for the Michelin CC+ back in 2018 was that (admitedly their) testing said those tyres dropped off less in performance than rivals (which were more winter biased) and was better than them when at 2mm of tread remaining.

As yet I haven't been able to test that claim...because my locale has had minimal snow in that time and I've never had to drive on it, plus like many people I've not done much driving over the last few years, so the tyres still are around 6mm of tread left.

Hopefully the OP won't be needing to drive to the ski slopes! Perhaps if they live in the North of the UK they may need more winter-biased all-season tyres or, if they live in a remote, high-up area, separate sets of winter and summer tyres, if they can get the other set stored out of season ok.

Mine appear to be Michelin CCs too (OP).
