Audi BMW Mercedes - Help me Buy a used Car- Audi vs Mercedes vs BMW - Sahil Singla
Hello

I am looking for a used car and want to go for a German brand: Audi, BMW or Mercedes

Budget:15K to 22K pounds

Mileage: Less than 55K

Year: Between 2016 and 2019

I don’t drive a lot, around 5-6K miles per year.

I have checked the websites and there are few cars that come up:
1. Audi A4
2. Mercedes C Class
3. Mercedes E class
4. BMW 3 series
5. bMW 5 series
6. Audi A5

I believe Petrol is more suitable to my needs but happy to hear your opinions (I can do 20-30 mile Motorway journey every 15 days)

My key concern is reliability as I don’t want to end up with huge maintenance bill and I am not good at DIY

Having a good infotainment system would be good.

I would really appreciate your views..

With reliability being the key concern, I'd actually be looking at a Lexus (probably an IS or GS hybrid), rather than any of your German options.

Not sure which of your choices would be most reliable, but I'd probably be looking at a decent sized petrol engine.

BMW 530i 535i or 540i with the best spec you can get. All 3 will give you 35mpg plus on a run and are very reliable chain driven engines and excellent gearbox.

I have considered Lexus but I have this itch to buy German.
Since this is my first big car (Currently drive an I20), I am finding it hard to reason with myself.

This itch will only go away after I have experienced it myself.

Best not buy a used German car then. As Badbusdriver said, buy a Lexus.

Been there, I had to scratch it too. The 2yr old BMW E46 Coupe I bought almost put me off the brand for life. It was a proper boomerang car, always returning to the dealers ramps.

Do you want an automatic gearbox, manual or are you not particularly fussed?

I used to be in this position. I have always wanted as much car for as little money as possible. Back then, BMW and MB were perceived by the motoring press as being, IMHO erroneously, a cut above Audi. This meant that Audis depreciated a lot in their first few years, especially the bigger ones with bigger engines, resulting in bargains. However, they traded not just on their stylish looks and 'vorsprung durch technik' but also on their reliability and durability, e.g. their regular wins at Le Mans. I don't know whether that opinion is still valid, but used Audis have served me well over the past thirty years. I've only needed three, the first two bought at four years old and my current sleek A8 (Cd better than a DB9) bought at eight years old. It's now sixteen, made of aluminium and its big unstressed naturally aspirated engine has still only done 72,000 miles so it should still have many years of life left. It has virtually stopped depreciating (I paid 12k for it) and I fully expect it to outlast its rusting steel two wheel drive German contemporaries....and me. I would put an A6 on your list - at the top.

The reason why I asked if the OP wanted an auto or manual is due to 4cyl Audis using an automated manual gearbox which does not have a good reputation for longevity, a need for a self shifter would rule out the majority of Audis as a long term used but. Fortunately the box in that lovely old A8 is a torque converter setup. I do like the A8, it was a beautifully made big car and excellent value used as large Audi saloons typically plummet in value from new. I’ve also had my eye on a VW Phaeton a local elderly fella has. I believe it’s a V6 petrol and it’s mint.

Thank you. It is great to know that Audis have served you well.

Does your opinion change given that I am interested in Automatic Gerbox

Gearbox choice is very important. I would (and did) avoid Audi's multitronic box which had problems. The best autoboxes are made by factories which make gearboxes, not cars. You would be safest with the ZF5 HP or the later ZF6 HP in older used cars. They are found in Audis, BMWs and Porsches and are usually bombproof.

Sorry, I should have mentioned. I want to go with Automatic Gearbox

It will be great to have your opinion on this

I’d leave the Audi out then. They don’t have a good reputation for the longevity of their automated manual gearboxes. The A8 and certain larger A6’s do I believe use a conventional torque converter box but it’s hard to be sure of what you’re buying and speaking to a transmission specialist on the subject would typically see you looking elsewhere. BMW (some newer cars use a DCT) and Mercedes’ mostly use conventional torque converter setups which are generally very robust and Lexus use a CVT which although hardy it doesn’t like a heavy right foot. I’d rule out the Audi if you want an auto unless you’re willing to find a newer car and an extended manufacturer backed warranty with a claims limit large enough to cover gearboxes failure. I’d probably be focussed on a BMW 3 or 5 series and I’d only buy one if I had a good genuine local BMW specialist nearby to maintain it as using the wrong oil (as many backstreet garages often do) will usually end the engine very prematurely through timing chain failure. The main dealer will destroy your bank balance. I’m fortunate enough to have two local specialists and a local Merc specialist. Just remember that these are not reliable cars as they age, repairs will be regular and the drive appeal very much depends on you maintaining it well using top quality parts. A Mercedes C or E class are worthy contenders too but again main dealers are utter robbing gits so buy only if there’s a good specialist nearby. Sorry for no paragraphs here, for some reason it won’t let me when I quote the previous comment.

This looks rather appealing.

I just found a great car on Auto Trader:

But common sense would probably see me in a 520 diesel auto with full BMW history and I’d try to avoid any that’ve been maintained under the i****ic long life service plans where the cars only seen fresh oil every couple of years. These need proof of annual servicing and if you aren’t willing and able to fund either a full main dealer or genuine BM specialist service history then don’t buy one. The diesels are extremely efficient and quick enough for any sane person. Look after it and take it a regular longer run to clear the DPF and it should be fine.

The interior of the 535 is not very practical. M sport spec is more desirable and not many factory extras Low miles of only 4k a year is a plus nice colour. If you consider, check tyres, it should have new ones by now. It is a very quick car! You should expect a years warranty from BMW on this car and it being fully serviced. These 535's are rare and should hold their value

You do not want to buy a diesel with the mileage you stated

Got to be the 535 out of that two, surely!,

OP is only doing 5-6k miles per year after all.
