Just picked up my 2011 Accord today, which I’m very happy with. Only came with one key- can anyone suggest the most cost effective way of buying and programming a spare- I assume there is a better way than just going to the main dealer and paying £££?

Have you actually had a quote from the dealer? Sometimes it’s cheaper than the copies .

Try Timpsons speialist car outlets

I used them for the Civic keys, as the original owner gave me keys not for this car except one, took them to Timpsons, paid £120 for one key and about 10 minutes to program, Honda wanted £220 for one key, and wanted the car for a morning to program

Civic only allows 3 keys to be progammed according to Honda and that is now what I have programmed to it

Thanks, sounds like Timpson is worth checking out. Previously had to pay Toyota about £250 for a replacement for my Auris and that’s about 10% of what I just paid for the Accord!

Toyota are more expensive than Honda as my fil needed a new key for his Yaris before he sold it, they asked £250 for one key so went to Timpsons

they did it for £80 no idea why it was cheaper than the civic as its a similar key, I can only think the remote is different even though they look the same ?

Timpson is still a family owned firm and the old man has a regular interesting column in the Telegraph. One of the things he highlights is the autonomy of his team members. For many services there are no fixed prices and the local operative can set his own prices according to the local market and what works. I don’t know if this applies to car keys but that might explain price differences.

Having said that I would regard them as my first port of call for a car key but would try more than one branch if the cost looks high.

Worth checking out the local independent locksmiths who have often been squeezed out by the larger organisations like Timpsons..

They often can’t afford the subsidised rents in big shopping centres and in my town have been forced to close down or move to cheaper premises.

The staff are usually specialist locksmiths rather than Jack of all Trades Cobblers , engravers etc who have had a crash course in the trade !

and his son James has one in the Sunday Times. A fine example of a 'mittlestand' business.

Our Audi and Peugeot have traditional metal keys if the electrics fail. Cars which don't would be a significant con (in two senses) for me. Yet another example of motor industry creating a good chance of future expensive remedial activity. I well remember a couple's disbelief and then dismay at a Ford spare part counter when they realised the cost of a key replacement would relieve them of the best part of their old age pensions for that week.
