Is a high mileage BMW a money pit or can they go the distance if properly and religiously serviced
Depends on what you mean by going the distance. 4 cyl BMW's are not considered especially reliable, though obviously there are going to be exceptions. In addition, BMW's, like most prestige manufacturers, have been making their cars ever more complex for some time now, not just mechanically, but in terms of electrics too. With a 6 cyl petrol engine and, if such a thing exists, a fairly low spec (gadget wise), I'd have reasonable confidence of a BMW doing big miles reliably and lasting a decent amount of time.
A full BMW service history in my opinion is worthless as so little is done and what is done is done at length service intervals.
A full BMW service history may be worthless in your opinion, but in fact opposite is true. Just look at what a BMW with full BMW history will fetch on the used market compared to one without. That isn't opinion, it's fact.
You could buy a BMW at a dealer with FSN at 45k miles and its only had two oil changes - ridiculous.
No reason at all why a car which spends most of its time cruising on main roads and motorways at pretty much optimum revs in terms of efficiency and wear, should need to change its oil more than twice in 45k miles. That is why BMW's (amongst others) tell you when they need to be serviced rather than just saying after 'x' amount of miles or 'x' amount of time.
