Smart motorway variable limit ends - Placidum
Hi everyone, first post here.

I’m a fairly new driver and have a question about smart motorways.

When you have been going for several miles under a variable speed limit, eg 50 mph, and each of the gantry boards displays 50mph, but then the gantrie boards become blank with no speed limit displayed.

Can you start doing the national speed limit again once you are driving through the blank board gantries, or do you have to wait for the gantry boards to signal the national speed limit symbol again? I get conflicting information from a google search of official sources.

Many thanks

There's normally a termination sign in the form of a graphic representation of the NSL sign but I suspect that, given the dynamic nature of variable speed limits, it may sometimes move from being ahead of you to being behind you.

If you've passed a blank limit repeater or two and cannot see any more ahead than it's reasonable to assume the limit is 70.

Or you could just do what the other drivers are doing ....

Based on what normally happens some will speed up, some stay the same and some slow down...who do you follow? LOL
