MINI One - Engine management light - strickjumpers

Hello.

Looking to buy a mini one with EML on.

Seller tells me it was diagnosed as camshaft sensor.

It was replaced and car runs fine but light still on.he says it was not cancelled.

Would replacing the sensor not self cance the light if that was the genuine fault or would the light need to be extinguished?

Any more ideas of this light symptoms appreciated.

Thanks.

Mike.

What age is this car , and how many miles covered ?

Usually EMLs reset themselves.

I would take the vendor is a lying incompetent and go no further - unless you get a 25% discount to cater for potential problems.

He probably knows the engine is clapped out .

You have no rights with a private sale - unless you can PROVE he lied.(Usually in writing).

Run away. Lots around.

If he seriously wanted to, he could pay someone to sort it.

Be very careful he is taking you for a fool. If you were selling a car with a light on and all it needs is a new sensor you would replace it. If this engine has a timing chain it will mean that is worn and needs replacing so move on and find another car.

EML should go off within three driving cycles if the fault has been fixed.

Always be wary of anyone selling who says "easy fix, not got time" or "just a sensor"

In this case I bet the seller has put a cheap ODB reader on, seen the code for cam sensor and just thrown a part at the problem in the hope it fixes it. The art of diagnosis is much more than this.

The car is a 2008 1.4 petrol 98k..

Thanks for all the advice..its a nice motor and mot check through gov.uk.

Checks out well.its what I consider cheap at 1k asking and I can do a timing chain myself...

Worth a look and will e mindful of the good advice.

If asked to view it with engine cold and let's me listen for tensioner causing chain rattle...

Cheers. Mike.

A Psa/Prince engine at this mileage, I would consider worn out . Timing chain issues and heavy oil consumption usually make these a write off . Car needs to be super cheap for a punt . Also check clutch operation and noises from gearbox.
