Mercedes c class - Mercedes C class 2015 seats uncomfortable - japdriver

Evening all,
I have purchased a 2015 C220D SE auto. I just cannot get comfortable driving it! The side bolster on the right hand side of the drivers seat is digging into my thigh and feels mega uncomfortable after a short time. As it is an auto the accelerator is offset to the right, so my thigh is resting on the edge of the bolster all of the time.
I have been to a Mercedes dealer and the A class and CLA are just the same with brand new models.

1) I am a 6 foot tall broad (not fat!) 14 stone man.

2) I’ve tried moving closer, higher, lower but cannot get comfy.

3) why are seemingly all the Mercedes seats so narrow? I can’t believe nobody else struggles to get comfy, I am not an unusually odd shape?
4) How can I get comfy? I’m now hating the car, when it is fab to drive. What am I missing?

All ideas welcome.

Firstly, why on earth would you buy a car you can't get comfy in?.

Secondly, given how you feel about the seats, get rid of the car and replace it with something you can get comfy in.

Back in 2018 I was toying with getting a new C Class, after having had one of the previous generation. I am 6' 4" and about 14 stones. I found the seats all very narrow and hard - my back was resting against the bolsters each side.. Went to Lexus instead.

Good question - 20 minute test drive it felt fine. 45 minute drive home it started feeling uncomfortable. I’ve never had a car that had uncomfy seats before. Previous car was a 2018 Picanto and they were perfect! It didn’t even cross my mind that a modern car could have poor seats...

Interesting to compare that comment with the HJ review.

The driving position is good with plenty of adjustment in the seat and steering column and the high centre console with its armrest means the C-Class is incredibly comfortable on long journeys, helped by the usual strong and supportive Mercedes-Benz seat design. Room for passengers in the back has markedly improved over the old car with better knee and headroom, especially noticeable when you have a taller driver in front.

20 years ago I had a similar experience with a Pug 206. The test drive was fine but not long enough. Two long journeys to Devon and Scotland proved that the seats became uncomfortable after an hour or so. After a couple of months I swapped the car (literally, it cost nothing to change) for a 306 HDi, which I kept for 6 years.

Had a few Mercs with no problems getting comfy, I just experiment with the plethora seat adjustments 'til I'm ok.

The problem is not with the seat position, its with the width of the seat between the bolsters - I know exactly the problem the OP has. I am pretty broad (not fat) and the seat is too narrow. It surprises me a bit because I thought, on average, Germans are pretty broad too. Older generations of Mercedes were much better, it seems a modern trend. I recently drove a Fiesta ST and it was terribly uncomfortable because the seats were so narrow.

Is this problem confined to 'sporty' cars ? Imitations of Recaro seats designed to hurtle through hairpins keeping the occupant in a fixed attitude ?

Lots of car upholstery specialists/ trimmers are listed online. Many of them mention improving comfort. Also maybe an independent Merc specialist can also alter the bolster or recommend someone who can? Main dealers will not be interested.

Of course an alteration may still leave the seat uncomfortable so it’s best to find someone who has actually solved the issue before.

Meanwhile I wonder if you can set the seat very low and get a piece of dense upholstery foam cut to fill the seat between the bolsters to reduce their effective height. It’s not a permanent solution but it would confirm if it’s just a bolster issue?

According to the NHS BMI calculator you are, ahem, overweight.

It doesn’t take much muscle to push oneself over the BMI limit, I know people who are classified obese despite being lean.

Mercedes is not what it used to be.

Surely this highlights the problem of short test drives accompanied by a salesperson who may distract you.
That's why the Hertz Rent to buy system is so attractive. Hire the car for a week for a nominal fee and either return the car and pay the rental or buy the car outright .
During that week you will get plenty of opportunity to spot the foibles at your leisure.

They might be 'TOFI' and/or NWO. (Normal weight obesity).

Thank you for your helpful input. So does this mean Mercedes should test a persons bmi before they buy?

I will immediately stop working out at the gym, stop playing rugby, and go on a crash diet....but it still won’t make my hips narrower.....maybe surgery is required. Yes, surgery so I can have my bones plained so I can fit in a Mercedes seat....

Or Mercedes make wider seats in their cars?

I am somewhat perplexed that Mercedes is for very narrow build people only.

I test drove an A class Merc and found the artificial leather seats made my legs sticky. The salesman said there was no option for real leather. So I gave up idea if a Merc. Perhaps Jaguar would be better? No. Even on the test drive the XE seats clearly had no lumbar support. The salesman said there is an optional variable lumber support, but why does the stadard seat lack even a fixed lumber support?

Most other cars I've had no issues like these. Why are two so called premium brands so lacking in such a fundamental way?

I'm large and 6ft 4" and seem to have the same problem with later very bolstered seats - it's a feature these days. I had a similar problem with my current current Skoda Superb mkII - resolved by carefully pushing out the bolster outer metal frames. The problem in the future will be finding a replacement - I now find my current car perfect re comfort.

To be honest I also have trouble with the position of B pillars (door arm rest way too far forward) and position of door plastic(knees!) as well with many cars - hence the Superb with big front doors.

My view is that if you can't get comfortable on a car then best to change the car. This is why an extended test drive is very important. Usually uncomfortable feeling starts to appear after 45-60 minutes of continuous driving.

Mercedes steering/pedal offset is often mentioned as problem for RHD markets. This is another reason why I prefer Japanese cars. Surprisingly Korean cars also work better for me even though they are LHD in base country. Never owned Volvo, but heard their seats are very good.
