Hey! Just looking for some advice.
In 2018 I part ex’d my car for a new vehicle. I gave the guy the log book to my old car and then he gave me the green slip with new details. He said I shouldn’t need to do anything else.
I was driving the vehicle home so I taxed it there and then using the green slip. I never received the v5 log book in the post and didn’t think anything of it. I have only now realised the importance of me not having my v5 log book, and ensuring that I am actually the registered keeper of this vehicle. Stupid of me I know but truly I had no idea about this.
So I have a couple of questions:

- Will the vehicle be taxed in my name? I have used my bank details, my email address etc. I’m just failing to remember if you have to give your name and details in when you set up the direct debit? I have been paying for the tax for 3 years and MOT. (Since Oct 2018)
- if I send the V62 am I going to get in huge trouble for leaving it so late? You have to specify when you bought the vehicle on the form so they’re going to raise their eyebrows when they see it was so long ago. How much is the fine?
- I can see online my old vehicle has been declared SORN and has been taxed/ mot for the past 3 years since I sold it - should I assume that the guy in the garage sorted the new keeper details from his end?

Basically, I just have no idea, I’m scared of getting in trouble. They make it so hard to check these things online. Yes it’s my fault I should have done my research but they should make it easier for people too!!

thanks

If you check and the car is taxed and the money is going from your account you should be ol.

Check if car is taxed here

www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax

get a new registration document here

www.gov.uk/vehicle-log-book

You need to get a log book (V5C) if the original has been lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed by you or your insurance company.

You can get a duplicate log book online if you do not need to change anything in the log book. The log book will be posted to the address which the DVLA has on record.

There are other ways to get a log book if:

  • your name or address have changed
  • the vehicle details have changed
  • you’ve bought, sold or transferred a vehicle
  • you did not get a log book with your new vehicle

Thanks so much for the reply - the vehicle is 100% taxed and coming out of my bank account since 2018.

So do I need to just apply for the v5c and it will have my details, or should I do the v62 and send off my green slip because I’ve never had a log book for the vehicle in my name? I’m worried if I buy the log book it will not have the correct details if the guy I bought the car off never sent off the documents as he said he would. Or does it go off the details I taxed it on?

As you've no evidence a log book has ever been issued in your name then anything that simply sends a duplicate to DVLA's retained address may not help. Either it goes to the previous keeper or, if your address has been scrambled, to the wrong address.

You've still got the green slip V62 looks like the way to go and should be no fee.

Alternatively you could phone DVLA and seek their advice.

I don't think the identity of the person paying helps. I've paid my son's on several occasions because he's forgotten and the reminder comes here.

Thanks for the reply this is what I thought - I just panicked when it asked when I bought the car on the v62 document as I don’t want to get into any major trouble because I was just being silly for so long.

Same with if I call them. I guess I will just have to bite the bullet and do it and be honest. Hopefully they will be understanding, you just hear horror stories online about them!!

Wish there was an easy way to find out the registered keeper even if just surname - I suppose it’s data protection though understandably

I thought that if the reminder comes to you, is his driving licence at the same address.?

Is the car registered at that address to save on insurance, or perhaps he is "temporarily" away from home?

What happens if you are on holiday and an NIp comes through and he doesn't get it in time?

Just a question...

When he bought the car he'd just left Uni so registered it at home. He then moved in temporarily with his girlfriend's parents but didn't change the V5 though he declared their address for insurance. When they got a flat together he never got around to changing it though he did update his driving licence.

I've paid his tax at least twice and Merseyflow penalties too. If he's NIP'd at this address and loses out then it's his problem. Not as if he's not had the opportunity.

As you've no evidence a log book has ever been issued ….

The DVLA car check shows issue date of last V5C, so OP could see if dates roughly align?

If you did the transfer online, and it was insured, you will have put in your personal details including your current address.

Forget the v62, they say to destroy it once registered in your name.

Cough up the £25.. and forget everything else.. (meant nicely!)

I didn’t transfer anything online I don’t think, I literally just picked up the car, they took my previous log book and gave me the v5 slip for the new vehicle and that was it. I taxed and insured it before driving home and have been paying ever since.
I don’t mind paying the £25 lol I just genuinely have no idea if it’s in my name so would they send it to my address with my details or details of previous owner?

Not possible unless the log book is still in their name..

If so get it sorted ASAP as technically you won't be insured if the V5c is not in your name and you haven't told your insurer.

Ah I will do I’m getting the v62 printed off today and going to send them that with my green slip. Might give them a call too just to be safe - if I get fined for the mistake then I get fined (hopefully not too much!!). Really anxious about it all at the moment.

Hi I have a similar thing. Did it all work out okay for you getting your v5c? Thanks!
