Slap!!!! Slap!!!!!!!!!
I know you like it Steve LOL (anyway we bought one anyway)
I'd say the Yaris, having chosen one for a (nearly) 19 year old to buy, otherwise I'd go for the Ibiza personally (having done exhaustive research) There was one for sale on here wasn't there last week?
You can possibly search through Google Nick and find a similar website to the one I found for girls (Young Lady Driver) which lets you play around putting in all kinds of models of car and gives you sample quotes for all with no hassle.
Unfortunately young men cost quite a lot more to insure. The only way you'll keep the premium lower in all honesty, is probably to go for a smaller engine, even though you may think it cramps your style, and try and keep your car somewhere secure overnight. It also reduced the cost of insurance for our daughter by putting both her parents on the policy - two, rather than one brought the price down.
Just bear in mind that whatever's cheapest to purchase might not work out most cost effective when you take insurance, parts and servicing etc. into consideration. You might save money in the long run by spending a bit more up front.
How long do you plan to keep the car for?

Well i presume from your name NickS that you are a man. Therfore i dont advise that you buy a Yaris - 2 reasons: firstly you will never get laid as long as you have it(!!!). Secondly someone will think you've borrowed it from your gran.
Ibiza's are quite decent with perhaps a better image than the Polo for a teen male. However they 'feel' less satisying than the polo.
For £4k you could get a Polo 1.4 16v that is not that high for insurance (group 10), but pretty pokey, and looks ok too. Use somebody like Allen and Allen or Sterling, Bell Direct or one of the other specialists and insurance shouldnt be too bad.
|
I have it on good authority ;) that should they be sooooo shallow (hmm) Polos are totally unsexy cars for young girls (for what it's worth)
See also huuuuuuge moaning on here about VW.
Broken down cars are even worse mind.
Skint blokes can also be a bit of a turn off (and by that I don't mean not loaded, I mean ones who have to spend every last penny on keeping their wheels on the road) - a decent car and a bit of cash left over would be good!

Sorry to disagree but a Yaris is in no way sexy to anyone between 18-30 - i should know as i work in an office with about 20 of em - 12 female and 8 male!
I dont mean to be presumptious (but i will) but this guy is off to Uni. He wants a bit of everything, not solely based around reliability and practicality.
A Yaris is not cool. At all.

Times are changing mate - my daughter's 19 next month and all her friends, male (mostly) and female (some) are jealous to bits.
Has to be said as an art student she sets fashions, rather than follows them.
Mind you she's a stunner, if I say it myself - so perhaps she's so gorgeous that the car don't count???? Otherwise the rest of the world will catch up eventually.
ps - Polos are for grandads, pipe and slipper wearing, even my mum wasn't interested
pps - look above I also said go for the Ibiza
ppps - hope you aren't still wearing denim ;)

Times are chaning mate???? I'm 26 - you are a middle aged plus mother who drives a Honda CRV or something and you're lecturing me on fashionable cars!!
Of course her friends are jealous - you've bought a new car that she probably regards as for her. Who wouldnt be jealous of a free use car.
I'm sorry Hootie, i appreciate you have a 'fondness' for your daughter and her interests but dont for a second think she sets fashions. She mimics and interprets like most students, but an 18 yr old who goes to college i'd like to see her set a fashion at this stage for the world to follow!
I live in Bournemouth. There are lots of old people here. There are also a lot of Yaris' - driven by old people. There are a lot of polos. some driven by old people. most driven by very attractive stylish young girls and other professionals.
I presume your Marie Claire tells you Denim is out......
Thanks for your fashion advice. I must change my Oswald Boateng suit immediately......
|
:-D Calm down, calm down - easy to wind up aren't you? Try spotting a little tongue-in-cheek, what I said was said with a soh. The denim comment was a *joke* :)
On a personal note, as I was a 'child bride', I'm not so middle aged as you seem to think ;) The fact that I drive a CRV just proves the fact that I am maverick anti fashion and not frightened to chose what suits ME, and not what I think imagine demands. And secondly you don't know my daughter, what she's like, or what she does. 98% of her friends have new cars, or almost new, so they have no reason to be jealous, not all of them had a say in what was purchased though, perhaps they could be jealous of that? I'll try see what she thinks of swapping her place in London for the fashion hot spots of Bournemouth, and get back to you - she's always willing to pick up new tips ;) (<----- please note here said with a smile not a barb)
On a serious note, I'm not on commission flogging a Yaris (or anything else) to anyone, it wasn't even my initial suggestion, I merely agreed that they are good cars (and I'm not on my own in that) and you will have noted my agreement with the suggestion of the Ibiza.
Yes, the Yaris is driven by lots of older people (and younger) who look into what they can get for their money, and consider the comparitive residual values etc. of differing makes. For our own part, we wanted a car that would still be a good car when our younger daughter is also learning to drive in another two or three years time.
I still stand by my comments that the car will be a serious financial obligation, and reliability and costs are a prime factor to consider. When you're a student or in the first few years of work, the last thing you need is a car that's just a gigantic money pit. Sometimes the comments that people make on here in conversation, just set you off on a train of thought that proves very useful. A I said before, it's often the case that buying cheap doesn't always mean saving money, and sometimes paying more in the first instance (especially as interest rates are so low now if you need finance) isn't the most costly.
P.S.
"dont for a second think she sets fashions. She mimics and interprets like most students, but an 18 yr old who goes to college i'd like to see her set a fashion at this stage for the world to follow!"
It's been done before you know, and strangely lots of things that at one time seem 'old man' or 'grannyish' experience a turn around ~ someone has to start it off.
Don't think my daughter has any plans at all for world domination ~ not for a while anyway, then again you never know!

Well, I'm 27 and love it, my 24 year old sister loves them, everyone at work in the age range 21 to 60 thinks it's a lovely little car.
Plus, it may only be 1.0, but with 68bhp and <800kg it can't half shift. Anyway, I think I'd rather drive around in a car that is cheap to run and insure, pleasant to drive and functional than one that gives me just a little bit more chance of pulling the birds...

How about a Nissan Micra--cheap insurance and very reliable.
If you can find a 1.3 then you have decent performance too.
And they keep their resale value too.
|
Met up with my nephew last week for a mid-day lunch.
Looked over his new (second hand) car with him.
Very nice and just what any 20 year old would like no doubt. Its a Ford Puma and no doubt should pull the girls.
Paid £6000 for it he told me.
Later I asked how much insurance cost him.
I couldn't believe what he told me and asked him to repeat it a couple of times.
"But you already had a car before this one why does it cost so much" Well he had been driving on his Dads insurance and this was his first own insurance.
No prizes but please have a guess what his premium was..

So, he's 20, don't know what his postcode is, where he'll keep it at night, when he passed his test, if he has a clean licence, how long he's had it, or what he does for a living, or if he's a student? don't know what model, year or size engine the car is?
but, do know it's a Ford Puma
Don't know if anyone else is going to be named on the insurance?
This is not going to be a very educated guess :(
Trying to cheat and ask google about car insurance + young men,
or younbg men + car insurance give us the interesting topic (2nd reply) of how young men can chose ladies underwear!!!!!
(sorry)
How about getting on for highish £2k's?

Hootie, Don't know the postcode but you know Allastree.
Don't think anyone anyone else is on the insurance but his answer was 6K.
Siiting there in the Broadway which you also know I said "6K is £6000.00. Don't you mean £600.00"
No he said I mean 6000.
Looked at his Dad who confirmed it.
To be honest I wouldn't have believed that anyones insurance could cost this amount but his Dad is Mr sobersides so I have to accept this as being true.
Told him he must be off his rocker but as he said your'e only young once.
Could 6000 be true or is he as daft as I told him he was.

www.insurenet.co.uk/yds/ will let anyone who wants to check out insurance for 17 -25 year olds have a play around and see what it comes up with ...you really would be amazed.
Conclusion, he\'s probably right (?) - but as to why he\'d think it was a good way to spend another six grand?!?!...SIX grand !!!
and you thought I was daft ;)

By the way - just read through the whole thread, and realised my tongue in cheek comments were in response to the 'you'll never get laid' comment. I took that as a joking comment but obviously my joking response saw some hackles rise. No worries.
BUT - all joking apart - just proves the point that some people will always be biased for, or against a particular marque or model, and nothing will change that. Sometimes, however, previously disregarded brands undergo a ressurgance - that was my real point.
It very much depends on what the individual wants out of their car - some people are more than happy if it just works! Nick had specifically said it has to be cheap to insure.
For example, we also thought of the Micra, or a Ka but just didn't like their appearance, despite the relative merits on paper. We looked at Corsas but were concerned about reliability and second hand value, the older ones (W reg say) we both felt looked a little dated compared to other makes. All that kind of thing is just personal preference.
Nick, do you have any definite 'no no's'? It's hard to give helpful advice without knowing anything about an individual's situation and likes or dislikes.

Some good points, agreed. However i do disagree with:
>>just proves the point that some people will always be biased for, or against a particular marque or model, and nothing will change that.
Well i certainly have nothing against Toyota. I had a Celica GT4 which was fantastic and a friend of mine has a Supra TT - An amazing car. I actually quite like Japanese cars and think some of their cars are very desirable. I just dont particularly like Yaris that much. Very reliable, and dependable but not great looking, and i believe fairly expensive for what they are (especially the T Sport Models).
It not bias against a model. Its just knowing there are more preferable alternatives.

For heaven's sake - Hootie likes the Yaris and thinks it is a cool car for a youngster to be seen in. Phoenicks thinks that it isn't. End of story, surely?!?
I'm 29 and happen to be quite ambivalent towards the Yaris. The base model ones are, IMHO, poo. But the sporty ones are quite sexy in a slightly effeminate, camp as a row of tents kind of way. But, like another poster says if it drives well and is cheap to run, why care what it looks like?
Anyway - NickS. My recommendation for a good, £4k ish replacement for your Astra would be a Citroen Xsara. I don't think that £4k could pick up an HDi, but the old 1.9 TD engines are good enough. My brother had one (hi, DieselBoy!) and it went like whatsit off a shovel. The only real gripe was the nasty gearchange but that could have just been that particular car.
Good luck, anyway, with your search. Let us know what you decide.
Cheers
Rob

Quieten it down children, you're disturbing my rest with all this noise.

Have you thought about a Citroen Saxo?
Citroen were doing them new with a years free insurance! (If you can stretch to 6K)

I've worked with "young people" (18-25 ish) for over a decade now and I reckon they are getting less adventurous, more conservative, and more sensible--my god I had a conversation a few months ago with an eighteen year-old fine art student about her pension scheme! She was wearing the full fine art student regalia (use your imaginations) but this was her topic of conversation, and with passion. Pensions I ask you; what is the world coming to? Hence the Yaris being A Good Thing, perhaps? Since when did a student want above all else a car that doesn't break down? Big, old, and humourously unreliable is what you want.

Well, you could always look at it this way - you'll get a lot of cred when you come to the rescue of lasses otherwise stranded when their or the person they are travelling withs car breaks down...

Just to chuck in another name , how about a Peugeot 306 (I know the Xsara has already been suggested...). I recently p/x my 306 1.4 LX (2000 X reg, 55,000mls) for £3,800, so you should pick up one private for around the £4,000 mark.
Mine was reliable apart from some self-inflicted shock absorber damage (driving in the snow, bouncing from kerb-to-kerb!!), with service costs being £100 per 20,000 miles (I had it for 40,000 mls & 18mths) I'm fairly certain the insurance group is only 4 or 5, and its a fairly sporty car (obv. on a relative scale!)
I traded mine in against an Astra Coupe, but they're probably out of your price range. I would have thought a new shape Astra 1.6 would be in your price range, prob on a W or X plate...
