Good Morning,
Now that my shiny Leon Cupra has arrived, I need to sell my Vauxhall Cavalier. I am keen to move it quickly. Given the details below, what should I pitch it at to generate interest and aim to actually get for it?
1995 (June 'M' Reg) Cavalier CDX V6.
95k miles. FSH, Full yr MOT and taxed until November.
Satin red, black leather with aircon. Electric everything and all works. No rust.
Generally good nick, sluggish recently and I suspect it needs new leads and DIS-pack. Cambelt last changed in Dec '99 at 69k miles. So it's due replacement in <10k miles or six months. Traction control has never worked.
Factoring in these costs for a prospective buyer and given that I want it to go, what should I pitch it at.
Any figures received gratefully.
Thanks very much

I reckon the car's worth £1200 or so, fixed. It's a relatively low mileage, top spec Cav so it's right at the top of the market.
If it is just the leads and the dis pack, I would get those done. Otherwise the prospective buyer is either going to walk away because they have no idea, or take a punt that it's (say) ~£100 of work and expect £300 or more off - maybe more, given that that kind of buyer is likely to want to pay trade prices and also be looking at auctions.
I wouldn't bother with the belt though. Another 10k is likely to be a year away, by which time it's incumbent on the buyer to fix the problem - just tell them when it was last done and don't lie and you'll be fine.

But the belt was last changed Dec '99, so if you go by what Vauxhall advise, it should be changed in 6 months time. ie, 40,000 miles or 4 yrs, whichever is sooner.

I did note the "cambelt factor" in my original post. Its not an insignificant cost when the time comes.
Care to take a punt at a valuation Dynamic Dave? You're a Vauxhall man I believe.

Hmmm, not too clued up when buying or selling, but I part-ex\'d my L reg Cav 2.0 8v auto (CDi model, 85,000 miles) two years ago and got £1500 for it against an £11k Vectra. DavidHM\'s price sounds about right if all the toys worked. I take it you\'re selling it privately? Just had a look at one price guide and it suggested £690 top wack for part-ex though. Parkers suggest £1180 private sale in good nick, or £675 trade.

Cheers Chaps,
I think I have my price range now. I'll let you know how it goes.

Whatever am I talking about? It was my J reg Cavvy that was the CDi. The L reg one was the Diplomat model. Anyway, you get the jist.

Yes, and the gist is that you spend far too much time in the company of old Vauxhalls...

Cavaliers are waning in popularity rapidly now, if you want it gone I'd say £1095 and expect to take a grand for it, even though it is a V6. IMO it is very difficult to get a good price for a car which was built shortly before the model went out of production, because anyone in the market for such a car could pay a bit more and get the model that replaced it (Vectra in this case, if you see what I mean).
