Hyundai Tucson 2016 1.6 - Do I need a new engine? - KelvC

Hi all,

So last week my engine started a knocking sound whilst I was on a reasonably long drive. It drove OK and I wasn't getting any engine lights on dashboard. Still being in warranty, I took it to Macklin Motors Hyundai but they will not fix as it has an LPG conversion and the first service was late by the first owner.

They charged me £252 for diagnosis and told me the following:

"Low compression in cylinder 1 and excessive carbon build up on piston 1 and 3.
Found excessively carbonated and wet oil on cylinders especially 1 and 4. Removed inlet manifold and found valves heavily choked with carbon.
Suspect valve stem oil seals passing oil and causing fault."

After getting the car from them, the car was struggling to drive and I get constant engine lights with error codes Low Compression on cylinder 1 & 4

So, should I look at trying to repair or getting a new engine?

This is the engine noise

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Kelvin

Modern engines are not designed to be repaired. I would look for a s/hand engine . Certainly not worth repairing your existing unit .

With full dealer service history, shouldn't Hyundai sort this out properly under the warranty?

OP states the first service was late, so the warranty is voided.

And an lpg conversion, which I presume is not factory installed.

That sounds horrific, but I'm not convinced it's terminal. I'd do a little more investigation before writing off the engine. Remove cam covers, look at belt driven components (alternator, water pump, tensioner). Perhaps drain the oil through a strainer and look for metal particles.

Hyundai Tucson 2016 1.6 - Do I need a new engine? - madf

How many miles?

Servised how many times?

Sounds to me like two cylinders have knackered rings.. carbon everywhere

The engine sound is metal knocking.

I would expect a full strip down and clean of cylinder head needed...Two new pistons..

Engine out job..

Frankly no guarantee the job would be done properly.

As for warranty with LPG system? Forget it..

Hyundai Tucson 2016 1.6 - Do I need a new engine? - gordonbennet

The problem with LPG systems is too many haven't had a flashlube system fitted, and even when fitted some owners don't keep them topped up (DIY simplicity itself and cheap as chips), and without flashlube many engines suffer valve seat recession (low compression), which can lead to all sorts of other problems.

Also, don't know if these engines are direct injection, many LPG installers won't touch DI because LPG tends to burn the petrol injectors up over time.

Thanks for your reply.

56k miles and the car was serviced every year. The first year was off due to the first owner being a taxi driver. So although the service was in the first year, the mileage at service was 25k miles instead of 10k.

I can get a new engine on eBay for £999.99 and a garage to install it for £500. So £1.5k to replace the engine. Not too bad.

Currently in discussion with Hyundai as when I bought the car, I called warranty support and they said LPG would not void the warranty by default, which they're now saying it does. They're trying to find the recorded call and said they may honour the repair if the agent did in fact advise me incorrectly.

Ripping them a new one on Twitter to add pressure to my case

Work with them, don’t antagonise them. Would you feel predisposed to help someone who attempts to create negative publicity on social media?
Hyundai Tucson 2016 1.6 - Do I need a new engine? - KelvC

Unfortunately there is no working with them, they had already closed my case and said "We are not able to assist you at this time".

Once I started the twitter tirade, they opened the case and started an "Investigation".

As aggressive and antagonistic as it may be, it makes a noise they don't want to hear, and are willing to go to extra lengths to silence.

You’re also not being truthful on your ‘tirade’ - a good part of the reason for not repairing under warranty is that it has an LPG conversion.
Hyundai Tucson 2016 1.6 - Do I need a new engine? - KelvC

I'm going with the reason Hyundai denied the warranty, which was due to the service book stating the first service was late. They said whether the car had LPG or not, the same situation would still stand.

I don't see you have a single strand to stand on, the first service 15k late destroyed makers warranty cover whatever happened afterwards.

Hopefully as an ex taxi you bought it really cheap, there's a reason such cars are cheap and that is because so many are neglected abused heaps, you pays your money and takes your chances, if it goes bang you dig into some of the dosh saved by buying a gamble and fix it.

You didn't say whether it was fitted with flashlube and was it working and kept supplied in fluid, if not the engine was ticking time bomb from the day the system was fitted or ran out of fluid.

Sold at 40k miles? suggest he got shot of the thing because it was showing signs of problems, did he even check the engine oil level for weeks on end.

I bought an ex taxi Granda Diesel really cheap with some 80k miles on the clock, engine worn badly due to no servicing and lack of engine oil due to bone idleness of taxi owner/driver, i had to recondition it myself, part and parcel of buying a car significantly cheap for its year.

Yeah, it had flash lube. He gave me 3 bottles with it and i topped it up regularly. Got it a bit cheaper than what I would have otherwise.

Been quoted £1.5k for a second hand engine so will probably go with that

One wonders whether the abundance oif flashlube when you bought it was cover, he could well have neglected topping that up as much as he did servicing the thing.

I went with my son to look at a LPG converted Subaru with the H6 engine, sure enough there was the flashlube bottle bone dry and the engine was definately lumpy, i wondered if that flashlube bottle was topped up before the next punter came along.

Used engine seems the sensible solution, you probably won't be out of pocket in the end when compared with what it should have cost had it not been cabbed.

Weasel Words

I'd interpret that "by default"as MAYBE. Which is of course saying nothing of any use to you.

BUT it doesn't seem to matter in this case, due to the very overdue servicing..

Thanks for your reply. I purchased the car privately, although it was serviced yearly the first service was late. Serviced at 25k miles instead of 10k. He was a taxi driver.

Current miles 56k

Thanks

Anyone with an ounce of sense would never buy a vehicle used as a taxi especially from a private seller.

First service 15k miles late - shows how well the vehicle was " not " cared for.

Hyundai Tucson 2016 1.6 - Do I need a new engine? - KelvC

I got a decent discount, the car was running well, I got a mechanic to check it over and it had only done 40k miles. I looked for 3 service stamps in the book but didn't check the millage at each so my error there.

It seemed a good deal at the time, obviously not.

Well there is your answer in your own words..

"Serviced at 25k miles instead of 10k."

If you had stated this at the start, it would be a short thread.

That is WAY over allowable.

Car hailed due to lack of maintenance buy prior owner.

You are wasting our time by not telling the full story.

Don't see that.

He isn't asking for legal advice, he's asking about his engine

IF, as the dealer says, its just valve damage (which might be consistent with LPG use) that shouldn't be a huge job.

If you've got piston ring and bore wear and perhaps bearing wear it gets to be a bigger deal. Would probably still be an economic repair here in Taiwan, where "black hands" are cheaper and engine swaps expensive due to the re-registration required for most cars.

In The Yook, I dunno, I suppose you could get a quote and find out, but they'll probably quote worst case which will be pricy

Classically you can get clues as to the location of the damage from an "old school" compression test by seeing how much difference putting oil in the cylinders (doesn't reduce valve leakage) makes, but perhaps there was already so much oil there that this test was pre-empted, otherwise you dealer should have done it.

A leak-down test should help locate the damage.

Hissing exhaust = exhaust valve(s)

Hissing intake = intake valves

Hissing oil cap/dipstick = cylinder blowby (probably the worst news)

Cross-hissing between cylinders = head gasket

This wont detect bearing wear, though you probably wont know about that on a used engine either,

If you can measure oil pressure that would be a clue. Probably worth a look at the cam lobes too.
