You can get professional standard software specific for the make in question for a good number of makes.
I have 'techstream' for my Toyota, only cost some £25 but had to get it installed on a laptop by a pro (i'm no 'puter wizard), costing probably another £20 and he still had to fiddle about to make it connect to the car, it can do almost everything the dealer diagnostics can from programming keys to auto bleeding the ABS system to programming new injectors.
Worth researching on make speciific forums to see if such a thing is available for the make you have.
I have general purpose code reader, not a toy either, whilst its happy enough on my Toyota reading the basics, the Subaru however does not like being connected to the thing and throws a hissy fit, so again i suggest you ask for your car make specifically.
