'Anyone renewing their home or motor insurance should pay no more than they would as a new customer, under a proposed shake-up of the sector.

'The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said the "radical" reforms would save consumers £3.7bn over 10 years.

'If adopted, the plans would see customers, old and new, buying on the same channel getting the same price.' (www.bbc.com/news/business-54243383)

Some of us here who complain about having to shop around every year at renewal time might welcome this - if it happens.

On the other hand, if it eats into the profits of insurance companies, won't premiums go up across the board?

And won't comparison websites take a hit?

Insurance companies are laughing at the moment.

Many people are now using their cars much less so claims are very likely to be fewer.

With more people now spending much more time in their homes, due to the vast increase this year in home working, burglaries will be less so fewer claims for theft.

They can well-afford to reduce premiums and they should.

No doubt insurance companies will be able to game it...

Despite having no claims for years on any insurance policy, my car, house and business insurances have all absolutely sky-rocketed in the last 12 months.

The whole industry is joke IMHO and when it is mandatory like car and employers liability, you have no choice.

Quite out of the blue I had a cheque for £50 from my insurer "due to the decrease in claims", made my day!

My house insurance was almost the same. So renewed as their policy has limits well outside my house/ contents values so no chance of being caught out by "small print"

My car insurance went up 30% ( no change in car, no claims etc) - looked around - new premium slightly less than last year and a £70 voucher coming shortly.

I no longer have any business insurance premiums so cannot comment other than they tended to be ruthless with putting up premiums and reluctant to pay out.!

Many firms in various industries like to heavily favour new customers over existing - utility and mobile phone firms in particular, as well as insurers (including the breakdown firms).

The problem is that people are gradually cottoning on to this and when they get poor customer service and their payments are essentially subsidising new customers, they leave and rarely return. This is now happening in the car industry as well.

Normally, any 'reforms' of the insurance industry rarely benefit customers - remember last time when they weren't allowed to be 'sexist' by having men's quotes higher than womens' for the same claims history, etc - they just put the price for women up.

It's funny how, when it benefits them with higher premiums, they are very specific about a person's risk and claims history, and when the person has a long history of no claims, they use very generalistic data to push the premiums up. Its like my car - it is an 'import' - but its from the EU, so there's actually no material difference in the components, just which ones that are fitted to each trim level, yet I likely pay 10-20% more for my insurance as a result.

The same goes for work on the car, when garages, even indies, see the word 'import', they jack up the prices, despite the parts being identical to UK spec cars.

Been going on for decades now. No sign of stopping any time soon, because most people don't take complaints further than a moan or snotty letter, and the authorities/governments/politicians would rather just have someone to blame and do nothing.

Only yesterday renewed my home insurance. When I got the renewal it had gone up nearly £100 went on all the comparison sites, and direct line ect and even did a like for like quote with the same insurer. It came out the cheapest at £3 less than laste year, rang them up they agreed on that price so once again insured for a good price with excellent cover. I for one will be glad when this mal practice come to an end. Loyal customers should be rewarded not have their pants pulled down. Ive been with sky TV for a long time and every time my contract ends I phonecthem up ask for their best deal and I get it so why can't insurance be the same.

I was at an insurance approved bodyshop last week with room for about 15 vehicles in the shop. There were only 6 in there and they have seen a 60% drop in business since March.

They are praying for a harsh winter with lots of snowy roads.

Locally to me, the insurance approved repairer has a dozen Toyota Aygo courtesy cars parked outside unused

Glad I've got all-season tyres fitted on my car then! Pre-emptive price rises for work doesn't bode well.
