I car each down to 1 shared car. Maintaining NCD - BPL

I guess I'm not the first or last person to consider thiis, does anyone out there have any first hand experience? With CV-19 & possible retirement we might only need 1 car ibstead of 2. Is there an acknowledged legal way of preserving NCD? Do you swap main driver every 2? years or so? Are insurance companies wise to this and start declining claims/refusing insurance? I'm happy to ask them after doing some research before I spoil it for myself by saying the wrong thing.

Person A insures in their name with person B as named driver, correctly declaring which is the main driver - then person B insures with person A as named driver, still correctly declaring which is the main driver - it's important that main driver is correctly declared..

In the olden days you'd have lost loyalty by switching insured person but there's little or no loyalty benefits these days.

I was wondering how often to switch. Do they get sp**** if you ask for A main driver B named and vice versa quotes every year.... Is it 2 or 3 years before you lose NCD these days? maybe it varies....?

It's 2 years uninsured and then you lose the NCD - since many people search the comparison sites and switch every year, jut do the same but switching driver A/B each time.

A woman I know was widowed - car & insurance was in her husbands name and she was a named driver.

Changed policy over to her name and on renewal full NCB.

No messing around.

We had this issue the other way years ago when we acquired a second vehicle. Although Mrs B had held a licence from 17 and had a spotless record she'd never had her own car/policy. A bit of shopping around found a policy with a 'starter' discount that meant she was paying approx same as me with a full NCD. Both cars were 1.7/1.9 PSA diesel hatchbacks so unlikely that the car made much difference.

In other words it's probably not worth getting too hung up on NCD. Like 'cost to change' when you buy a new car it's the bottom line that matters not how the deal is structured.

Some good advice here. At your respective ages and if you have clean driving records then you should both get a decent quote anyway. I would ask your existing insurers to confirm that you both have a no claims record for X years. Then use this to get quotes for your chosen vehicle from a few websites, quotes in your name and quotes in SWMBO's name. See which comes out the most competitive. Whichever you choose then next year swap over. As stated your NCD with last for 2 years without insurance. On the other hand it may be just a fiddle on and like me and SWMBO, I am the main driver, true, and she is named. It might all be a lot a faff for not much gain in the long run. The only real benefit may be if one of you had a large claim, but even then any insurer will ask about named drivers and their claims record. Catch 22.

Great advice from everyone. We want to have the flexibility of going back to 2 cars with full NCD, particularly if one is a performance one for fun.
