Nissan Micra Tempest - Glass to door weatherstrip/sweep bar/scraper - Jo Williamson

Hi - I've just bought a 52 plate (2003) Micra (because I got rid of my Polo two years ago because I didn't need it but wasn't planning on being asked to return to work!).

The bodywork is in excellent condition - it's only had one owner - but both glass to door window weatherstrips/scrapers are worn down to the metal on both doors - just in the middle 6 inches or so - I'm not even sure that they're called this but it's the bit on the door with felt inside to stop stuff going down the window.

Can I replace these completely (just the strip - not the window seal itself) or is it possible to buy anything to recoat the bare metal?

Whilst I'm not planning to keep this particular car long (if I carry on working then I'll replace it with a younger model) I would like to keep it in reasonable condition. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That weatherstrip is certainly replaceable, finding a new one could be a problem . Call the Nissan dealer to find out if they are still available. Many trim parts on cars become obsolete very quickly .

FP gave us a very helpful hint to enable us to post links that are shorter than this (I edited this one to get it to fit on the page):

Go to the TinyUrl website (tinyurl.com) and follow the instructions there.

You put in the complete url (web address) of the web page you're looking at (highlight, copy and paste). It may very well be dozens of characters long. The TinyUrl website will then convert this to a web address which is invariably much shorter and better for pasting into e-mails, posts etc. if you wish to create a link to the original page.

This is on a sticky thread in the General section.

I have always associated those "abbreviated" tinyurl things with chopped pork products on this forum..

so sorry. was trying...sob sob...

@ _ORB_

Thank you so much for your reply.

I seem to have been Googling and eBaying forever re. this weather strip. I've emailed the guy on eBay.

Forgive me - but the one thing I find confusing re. the car - it's a 52 plate (manufactured in 2002) but registered in 2003. Do I therefore go for 2002 as being the year to take note of when buying spares?

if you put your chassis number here, without the last six digits... someone if not me will tell you what it is.

Thank you _ORB_

I shall do that on Friday when I go to collect it again.

@elekie&a/c doctor

Thank you - that was to be my last resort as I seem to remember replacing a key on the Polo would be around £180 plus VAT (I eventually found it in the recycling bin!) so was hoping to be able to pick up one on a selling site.

Failing that - maybe a visit to my friendly neighbourhood metal recycling centre now that restriictions have been lifted.

I just can't work out why it's worn in the middle!

The soft bit that wipes the glass gets worn when bits of dirt/grit/ice get stuck and wear it away, better that than scratched windows.

Where in the country are you, perhaps someone will have a trusty indy bodyshop to help you.

I think you need to establish if this a K11 or K 12 micra . 2002/3 is just on the break point , so could be either . The rubber part of the weatherstrip perishes with age and just crumbles away . It’s not a very important part , and I don’t think I would worry to much about replacing them .
Nissan Micra Tempest - Glass to door weatherstrip/sweep bar/scraper - Jo Williamson

Hi elekie&a/c doctor

This is the problem I'm having - whether it's a K11 or K12.

I wanted to do something about them as they look tatty compared with the rest of the car - but they must be doing their job in this weather as it's completely dry and doesn't smell damp or musty and has been standing doing nothing for nearly a year I think before I saw it.

It's coming up as a Nissan Micra 2003 MK II [1992-2003] Hatchback 1.0i 16V 998ccm 60HP 44KW (Petrol) tho I've actually no idea where I got that information from now - I've done so much googling lately - but it's passed it's MoT today with flying colours!

"This is the problem I'm having - whether it's a K11 or K12."

Easy. Google K11 Micra and K12 Micra images. Which one does it look like?

Nissan Micra Tempest - Glass to door weatherstrip/sweep bar/scraper - Jo Williamson

Hiya - did this already and from images it's a K11 but was confused re. 52 plate and 2003 registration.

Nissan Micra Tempest - Glass to door weatherstrip/sweep bar/scraper - elekie&a/c doctor

This is a K11 Micra. Probably one of the most reliable cars ever made. The only issue these fail the mot ,is corrosion. Usually the sills or the front chassis/subframe area. Long may it continue to pass.

Nissan Micra Tempest - Glass to door weatherstrip/sweep bar/scraper - Jo Williamson

Thank you elekie! Delighted I have to say - with no advisories!

Even if the strips were not doing their job, the car would stay dry as long as the drain holes at the bottom of the doors are letting rainwater out properly. Have a look under each corner of the doors (use a mirror?) and poke a sliver of wood up the holes to make sure.

Nissan Micra Tempest - Glass to door weatherstrip/sweep bar/scraper - Jo Williamson

Ahh ... right ... okay ... Thank you Andrew.
