Hello - travelguy1234

Hello, I was the poster Samthefootball. I just want to apologize for the way I acted on here. Having seen now that driving lessons can resume I feel much more positive and hopeful and I am going to start applying for my provisional licence

Hello - travelguy1234

Does anyone know how long it might take for it to come through

Hello - Bromptonaut

Does anyone know how long it might take for it to come through

I think you'll probably find an answer on the DVLA website or amongst the recorded information on their telephone help lines. Assuming they're now processing applications I expect it will take longer than usual because they've had to reduce numbers in the office and suspend hot desking etc because of distancing etc.

Hello - travelguy1234

They are yes but I couldn't see anything about how long it will take. I did read that it usually takes about 2 weeks for one to come through but wasn't sure if that will be different because of covid

Apparently I can't start lessons right away though because they need to do catch up so that's going to be difficult as I am back at uni in september

Hello - FP

Oh....

He's back. Oh dear.

Hello - travelguy1234

Um I'm not going to get angry or like I did before so please can you either answer this thread or not put comments like this. I deserve another chance, My mental health was very bad but improving very slowly now

Hello - FP

"I deserve another chance..."

That's up to the moderator, but your sense of entitlement seems unchanged.

You seem upset at my comment, but you have posted yet another pointless question which no-one here can answer, so I can't see things going any better this time round.

Hello - travelguy1234

What is pointless about it. This is a motoring site I am asking a question how long it normally takes on a motor site. Come on mate, you were in my shoes once and wanted to learn to drive. perhaps be a bit kinder

Hello - mcb100
There you go:-

www.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence
Hello - thunderbird

Let me think, how did I get a license and book driving lessons. I remember, I applied for a license, back in the dark ages it was all done on paper and by snail mail so it took longer than the 1 week suggested for on-line applications on the DVSA website.

Whilst this was happening I went to see a local driving instructor (I remember walking to his house since I did not have a car and couldn't drive anyway) and booked lessons to start the week after my 17th birthday.

During the first lesson he advised me to apply for my test since there was a 5 month wait and by that time he hoped I would be OK to take the test.

So 17 lessons later (and a little time in dads car) I took my test and passed.

Simples.

Hello - travelguy1234

What do you suggest I do then if you don't mind me asking. I have contacted driving instructors and they have said they can't give me lessons until September but by that time I will be back at uni

Hello - Trilogy.

You can take driving lessons when you're back at uni.

Hello - travelguy1234

How if I'm studying. The majority of people don't do that, plus i might have people taking fun of me for doing that

Hello - Trilogy.

I see, you're studying 24 hours a day. No one's going to take fun out of you. Otherwise you'll have to wait until term ends, just like all those studying at uni who don't want to learn during term time.

Edited by Trilogy. on 25/06/2020 at 17:36

Hello - travelguy1234

I'm doing a years placement next year though so term time wouldn't really work, 2 weeks at Xmas plus 2 weeks at Easter isn't enough so it will probably have to be at uni i suppose

Hello - Jamie3141

How if I'm studying. The majority of people don't do that, plus i might have people taking fun of me for doing that

I passed first time while I was studying with no family/free lessons. Just do 20 or so lessons and have a go. Who cares what the majority of people do? The majority of people have an IQ less than 101. If somebody makes fun of you invite them to assume a supine position infront of your car once you've passed.

But no, seriously... If you're that bothered with what other people think, you're too immature to be on the road.

Don't get me wrong, you have my sympathy. It's a crap time to learn to drive, in a sense. In lots of places the road are still quite quiet though, which could potentially play into your favour. If you can't find a driving instructor willing to take you on though, you'll just have to wait, or let family teach you. Lots of people are having quite a tough time at the moment, and getting drivers on the road isn't really a priority for the economy.

Edited by Jamie3141 on 25/06/2020 at 17:36

Hello - travelguy1234

My family would never let me do that. They have one of those disability cars so I wouldn't be allowed to drive it in case i crashed it.

I would say it is a priority for the economy though because its apparently dangerous to use public transport, well cycling on motorways can't happen, and with public transport it cuts through the motorway's if that makes sense so I would say getting more people driving is a priority as it would mean more people being able to get into their workplaces in a safe manor, more people being able to travel to these shops and not having to use public transport to begin with which in turn would help these places survive

Hello - Jamie3141

You can still drive a motability vehicle if you're 21 or over. It sounds like you're quite young, so you might be out of luck.

I would say it is a priority for the economy though because its apparently dangerous to use public transport

There's some truth to that. There are more than ~34.5 million people with a driving license at the moment. Around 58,000 people pass per month (pre-pandemic). The ~200k potential new drivers that are currently without a license will likely have an almost undetectable effect on the health of the economy. Most learners are young and hold economically/societally insignificant or unimportant jobs. If you have an economically critical job, then you're classed as a critical worker, in which case, you can take the theory test and driving test.

The country should rightly prioritise schools, universities, hospitals, mechanics, freight workers, public transport, retail, those in 'wealth creation' roles, etc. Like I said, you have my sympathy though. It's a rubbish time to want to learn to drive and it's all out of your control.

Having said that, you haven't even got your provisional yet, so what are you worried about? That'll probably take a week or two. Then you have to do a theory test, and then you should start driving lessons. Start revising for your theory with the paid "Theory 4 in 1" app and the time will fly by.

Hello - travelguy1234

I thought you studied for the theory test while doing the driving lessons and in between do the theory test and then the driving test

Hello - Jamie3141

I thought you studied for the theory test while doing the driving lessons and in between do the theory test and then the driving test

That's one way to do it. Use your time efficiently though, you have nothing else to do at the moment.

If you pass the theory test before you start driving lessons, you're in better shape IMO. You don't want to be driving and think "what does that sign mean?" You want to have some level of proficiency before you're on the road. The theory is very easy too, don't waste money on paying an instructor to teach you that. They'll rob enough off you teaching you to drive.

The theory lasts for two years. Do it as soon as possible and just make sure you pass two years from the date of your theory pass. You don't want to pay to do it twice!

Hello - travelguy1234

Yeah I get that, the main thing I want to do is just get in a car and see what it's like to drive. I might not like it but I might like it if that makes sense. I know the theory is equally as important though.

Hello - Avant

The answer is simple. Book lessons now for when you are at university.

Almost certainly your university is in a big town or city. Look on www.yell.com for driving instructors near to where you're going to be living. There will doubtless be other students learning to drive, so it will be nothing unusual, and everyone needs a break from their studies.

When I worked at a college they had a deal with a local instructor for reduced rates for students. Cannot see why others would not do it, its a huge market to tap into and the College/Uni would probably get some cut out of the leads they give to the instructor. Benefits for all.

Hello - travelguy1234

Apparently I can't book the theory test yet because of coronavirus. What's the point in starting lessons again and practical tests if you can't book the theory test. it doesn't make sense

I do not see an issue. Its clear that you cannot start your lessons until you get to Uni since local instructors have no spaces. By then the Theory tests may well have started up again but if they haven't I still see no issue, simply do the Theory Test later as your practical tuition progresses.

The main obstacle I see for you is what happens if Universities do not open in September?

Hello - travelguy1234

Don't you watch the news. All university's are planning on in a blended lessons (Online/In Person) That is what was confirmed to me as well from my uni and i have a house share as well so won't be living in halls

Hello - Andrew-T

Might I light-heartedly suggest that before you go to uni you remember that University is not a make of car or a family name, so it forms a standard plural: universities.

Sorry .... and good luck with the driving lessons.

That's modern education for you.

Hello - travelguy1234

Well yes of course I know that but Im posting on a site not writing a essay so its not the end of the world and i'm already in my second year in September as well haha

Hello - Deryck

Two pieces of advice:

  • Apply for the provisional licence now and it will arrive in due course. Does it matter if it takes 2 or 3 weeks if instructors are not giving lessons until September?
  • Don't worry about things you cannot change - concentrate your efforts is doing things you can actually influence

Overall we are in the same boat together so just be prepared as best as you can for the time when we return to some form of normality. Whatever that may be.

I learnt to drive whilst at uni and it was a bit of a relief from the study to go out for an hour or so, and it didn't affect what I was doing.

Hello - Jamie3141

Theory tests are bookable from the 4th of July. Luckily for you, it isn't a written exam.

Hello - mcb100
As are lessons (at the discretion of the instructor).
Hello - travelguy1234

I know what your doing Jamie and its trying to bait me and it's not going to work. I don't know why people like you are so mean. Perhaps be a bit kinder. This is what I hate about sites and forums, people judge too much, would you say that to my face, no, well don't say it now

Hello - FP

"I know what your doing Jamie and its trying to bait me and it's not going to work. I don't know why people like you are so mean. Perhaps be a bit kinder."

In another thread, Jamie claimed he was being bullied in this forum.

Draw whatever conclusions you wish.

Surely you are not suggesting that Jamie3141 and travelguy1234 are the same chap. I guess it does look a bit fishy since both end in 4 numbers.

Or is it me being suspicious after his previous antics.

Hahahah. No offence to you, Travel, but I'm frankly insulted that you haven't been able to find a discernible difference in the writing style of our posts. Clearly, I need to whack the thesaurus out!

Hello - Avant

Absolutely, FP.

This forum is NOT the place for petty bickering, let alone bullying. I have up to now been tolerant in support of free speech. But this sort of thing is now spoiling the forum for the rest of us, and in future I will close any thread that descends to bickering or insults.

The original question was answered (take driving lessons in the local area of the university). Thread closed.

Hello - Jamie3141

I likely would say that to your face, actually. It's just a joke. I've given you lots of (what I would consider to be) helpful advice on this thread. Take it or leave it :)

In another thread, Jamie claimed he was being bullied in this forum.

With regards to FP, I'm amazed that grown men can be so catty... Meow. Smile, FP :)

Hello - travelguy1234

Ok well if it was only a joke that is fine. And I am thankful for the advice that you gave. I haven't had great experiences on sites/forums and alot of posters have judged me/made fun of me and family members as well. And I agree your advice you gave was helpful for me so thank you for that
