With my recent used car Mercedes were pushing star guard. I have turned it down,, wise decision or not?

Even before I checked what this is ("StarGard" I believe is how it's spelt) I would have done the same as you. In fact, the last time I bought a car I turned down the equivalent "care package" and bought some good quality car wax, some stuff to spray on fabrics to protect them, and some stuff for the leather too.

I doubt very much whether some trendy-sounding dealer's "care package" will be any better than, and certainly not as cheap as, what you could do yourself.

We bought a Smart for Two in Feb 2020.

We bargained on price and eventually accepted the Star Guard treatment.

It's now peeling off like a thin wrap would.

So I'm going to see how their promise stands up to a claim.

Their website (StarGard keeps your Mercedes-Benz looking as good as the day you bought it. | Stargard) states:

StarGard paint and fabric protection products are guaranteed to maintain your car’s appearance for it’s lifetime - your car retains the same superb look it had when you bought it and this helps to maintain its value when you come to sell it.

What does that do ? Stop the bonnet badge getting dirty? Don’t think I’d bother . Sounds like another dealer up sell .

All these dealer offerings, like stargard and autoglym life shine will work BUT they depend on the car being properly prepared and the product properly applied, sadly the valeters in the dealers are never given enough time ( or have the skills) to do a proper job, at best the car will get a blast with acid based tfr and the product applied.

Forget it-on analysis-most of all this sort of stuff is available in Wilkos or Halfords

It's the sales man's last chance to earn a bit more commission prior to sale.

My current vehicle has a sticker suggesting something similar has been applied, not by me as the car was used,

It still gets dirty, it still has stone chips!

Not worth it imo.

The best paintwork protection in the world is keeping your car in a garage when not in use with regular washing and waxing.

My A Class did not have StarGuard applied, my SLK did but it was done anyway without extra cost to me.

Both look good at 15/16 years old. The SLK's paintwork is almost like new but that's more to do with the fact that it's kept in a garage and covers a very low annual mileage.

I opted for a coat of protection on my current motor. The original quote was north of £400 and I refused but the Mrs said it would be a good idea so I agreed (saves nagging) and got the price down to £100 (how much margin is in these things).

Anyway, with light usage (<8000 miles over the last 16 months) the paint under the door handle is scuffed and I don't use a key or wear rings.

Not impressed.

These coatings even if applied correctly will only protect against airborne contaminants, they won't stop abrasive wear, stone chips etc, they won't, despite the blurb protect against bird droppings either ( if you do get a bird poo burn and the paints under 3 years old then I can recommend AG 'reflow') .
