Has anyone heard from him lately?

I knew he was poorly and hope he is recovering.

ORB - Trilogy.

Always going on about his MG or KIA.

ORB - thunderbird

Always going on about his MG or KIA.

Probably because they were the cars he had owned recently. Seen to remember it was a Venga followed by an MG SUV and most recently a Sportage.

ORB - badbusdriver

He hasn’t been around since an verbal spat with a sometime poster who has anger management issues. This was earlier in the lockdown, but the forum member in question made some very unpleasant comments re NHS employees (if memory serves, someone close to ORB, possibly his wife, is one of those fine people), and virus victims. ORB felt that said member should have been barred, but Avant had a different opinion.

It is a shame though, if you are reading this ORB, I hope yourself and your good lady are well. And that the Sportage is providing stellar service!.

ORB - Trilogy.

Bit difficult to ban someone. Avant did what he felt was right at the time.

ORB - thunderbird

ORB felt that said member should have been barred, but Avant had a different opinion.

Not just ORB, several (many?) of us thought that the views of the poster should mean he could never post again but unfortunately those i power had a different take on freedom of speech even if the views would not have been permitted in any other forum or in the real world.

Some forums are over moderated but sometimes I am stunned at the lack of action here.

ORB - badbusdriver

I have the utmost respect for Avant in the job as moderator (really not something i fancy doing!). For the most part i think he does brilliantly and do agree that, in most cases, a tolerant line is the right course of action.

But in this case (IMO), due to the nature of the comments, i think barring the forum member would have been more than justified.

ORB - Trilogy.

, i think barring the forum member would have been more than justified.

How?

ORB - thunderbird

, i think barring the forum member would have been more than justified.

How?

The poster said that he wished the old lady down the street would die of Covid so that his life could return to normal.

He was insulting to many forum members.

He repeatedly ignored Avants request to stop posting such comments.

He rejoined under different names and pretended to be nice for a few minutes.

Do you want me to go on.

ORB - groaver

Let's not argue gentlemen. I just hope that ORB is making a good recovery.

ORB - Trilogy.

You haven't read my the word I typed.

ORB - concrete

I also hope ORB and his family are alright. There are a few previous posters I miss. I suppose things sometimes come to a natural conclusion and people move on. It is a shame if they feel compelled to leave because of over enthusiastic comment. They probably feel it better to so do than join a slanging match.

Cheers Concrete

If he can rejoin why bother banning him?

Think the poster had mental health problems to be honest.

"Bit difficult to ban someone. Avant did what he felt was right at the time."

Thank you Trilogy. It's important to avoid knee-jerk reactions, and 'banning' someone is actually ineffective, as they can simply come back using another Email address. We don't have the facility to knock out IP addresses.

I did in fact disable that particular idiot's account after his outburst: he came back with a new address and apologised, so I gave him one more chance. Thereafter his language was less objectionable than Thunderbird's, but he seems to have gone away for the time being. I will keep a watch out for him.

I will Email ORB and wish him well.

ORB - Smileyman

I share with sending my good wishes

Is my memory failing me but I thought ORB spat out his dummy and gave Avant a ultimatum?

ORB - gordonbennet

Instead of arguing with or allowing yourself to be annoyed by a forum troll it's usually best to ignore them, sadly this forum doesn't have the option to 'ignore' individual posters, which usually means their offerings don't display on your ownbrowser, a useful tool in forums which have that facility.

I see another one is now active, hopefully if it gets no responses it will clear off when school resumes.

ORB - badbusdriver

Is my memory failing me but I thought ORB spat out his dummy and gave Avant a ultimatum?

That choice of words is perhaps a little unfair and seems to be making light of what the forum member actually said, which was highly offensive. ORB's reactions may have been a little OTT, but as far as i recall, he had actually had the virus (don't remember if it was officially confirmed as covid19) and got through it with the help of the NHS. So it was undoubtably (and understandably) a very raw nerve (especially if his wife is a nurse).

Instead of arguing with or allowing yourself to be annoyed by a forum troll it's usually best to ignore them

Certainly the correct course of action GB, but when comments are as offensive as that, it is very difficult to behave in a calm and considered manner. I only became aware of the comments when i was stopped for my lunch and looking at my phone. Because my phone is quite small, i tend not to get involved in conversations on it, (unless a very short and simple response). But i was so annoyed when i read the comments in question i was literally jumping up and down!.

But hopefully we will hear from ORB again. Reading his regular reports on whatever car he had was kind of therapeutic, a bit like listening to the shipping forecast!.

ORB - thunderbird

Thereafter his language was less objectionable than Thunderbird's,

Thanks for that, don't like to come second.

But seriously Avant, the poster's comments were so objectionable you should have done far more than you did.

What happens if he returns again when you consider he has so far made 2 visits with his disgusting ramblings. Will you make a more serious attempt to block him next time or simply allow him to upset other long term members.

ORB - gordonbennet

The problem with blocking these fools is the same as replying to the rubbish they post, you've given them attention lacking in their real lives, thankfully if male the chances of them procreating are slim at best, every cloud and all that :-)

Arguably by treating them as even slightly important, banning publicly a good example, is that they'll just keep signing in under temporary email addresses repeatedly once they've got some response.

It would be wonderful if Avant had a secrect virtual rocket launcher which could send a signal down the line which destroyed their device beyond salvage, sadly all he really has is the typical mod's delete buttons, we can do help more by not responding to people who in more enlightened times would have been put somewhere safe, by responding we encourage the twerp.

Regardless of all that was said ( I thankfully missed it), I just hope ORB is getting better. It sounded bad when I last saw one of his posts.

Life's too short to stew about trivialities.

Now, where is SLO76 with his autotrader specials? ;-)

He's still around, but seemingly avoids the overtly political threads.

ORB - Avant

And is very wise to do so! Many thanks GB and Groaver. I've Emailed ORB wishing him well from all of us and saying he's more than welcome to join us again.

I marked 'Sam' as a spammer after his last whinge: I'll watch carefully for him coming back with a new address, but he hasn't so far. Those marked as spammers can see their own posts, as can I, but nobody else can, so if they had brains they would notice that no-one replies to them.

Is my memory failing me but I thought ORB spat out his dummy and gave Avant a ultimatum?

We all have a choice, If we can't stand it at work, if we can leave, we leave. If there are people we dislike, some of us try to avoid them. If we can't stand something, some of us do something about it.

If I "spat out my dummy" as you put it, it was because I was really very angry, and as said in another reply, I posted as Avant had kindly emailed me and I was touched enoigh by those words and others on here that I posted something of a minor update to say, yes, I survived..

I may or may not post again, who knows...

Life after that point is different, for me at least.

Au Revoir...

I seem to get banned quite a lot, but I've always resisted doing that.

One has one's pride.

I'm afraid with...er...Americans it seems to be quite often a reading comprehension issue.

Since they don't understand, they assume it must be rude or Commie Propaganda.

Of course, sometimes its both.

I can confirm he's fine. He did have it but has recovered. Young Rover Girl being a Doctor apparently has been helpful. ORB is the same nice bloke we all appreciate. I hope he isn't embarrassed by that but he's one of the community on here that make it the place we all know and love.

Good to hear he's on the mend. I'll be glad when all this is over and we can get back to some kind of normality, so-to-speak. Many of us being stuck at home with nowt else to do has made us (me included) sometimes more irritable, especially as there's little to talk about other than the beer bug and (oh joy) politics.

Perhaps, once the lockdown is wound back enough for pubs to re-open groups of us in the same area can perhaps meet up and shoot the breeze rather than arrows at eachother online. If ORB is up to it, I'd consider taking a trip down the A14 to say hello, which would also do my car some good.

Rather depressing at the moment - we need something to look forward to.

ORB...

Came to this tread late.

Glad to hear that ORB is on the mend and look forward to his tales of woe (sorry the MGs gone), tales of joy re his new Kia.

ORB - expat

Good to hear that he is OK. His comments were always sensible and constructive. One of the good guys.

Glad to hear he’s well. I’ve always enjoyed his contributions here and wish he’d return.

ORB was indeed very poorly and the after effects, side effects are just as unpleasant, but I,ll save you all the details except that i was hours away from being defunctroveryboy at one stage. (But no pity please) Thanks to the NHS I survived!

Recovering is the operative word..

With all this going on, it has given me time to reflect on life in general, and my priorities are different now.

Thank you Avant for your email.

I wish everyone well and Happy Postings.

The Sportage, Nothing to report.. What a relief..

ORB - groaver

Good to hear from you ORBoy!

Lang may yer lum reek. :-)

ORB - Trilogy.

In the general scheme of of things the Sportage is irrelevant, that's replaceable. All the best! I'm not quite sure why you keep reinventing yourself with new, slightly adjusted forum names

ORB - _

I'm not quite sure why you keep reinventing yourself with new, slightly adjusted forum names

Because I can and it marks a change for me.

But don't worry, I won't have much to say about the Sportage..(or anything)

I posted a reply as Avant had very kindly emailed me.

ORB - Trilogy.

They say a change is good as a rest. Hope it's a good change for you.

I expect it will be mainly good things we hear about the Sportage.

ORB - nailit

Glad to hear that orb is okay.

Not been in here much lately, but often drop in read only.

All the best orb in your recovery.

Glad to see you're still in the Land of the Living, old bean. I can say from my own perspective that I too have been pondering what comes next for myself, though without having to contend like you with a game of Battleship with The Reaper.

Keep well, and do stop by when you can to chew the fat, etc.

ORB - FP

Dear Old Rover Boy,

Forgive me for quoting some bits and bobs of your recent messages. I noted these words particularly:

“i was hours away from being defunctroveryboy at one stage. (But no pity please)”

“With all this going on, it has given me time to reflect on life in general, and my priorities are different now.”

“I won't have much to say about the Sportage..(or anything)”

I know you don't want pity, but I hope sympathy won't go amiss. I am very sorry to hear you've been so unwell and glad you're recovering.

Often major health "events" make us reconsider what and who we are - which reminds me of my cancer episode at the end of 2018, thankfully now well behind me.

It does seem (unless I'm misinterpreting your words) that you don't intend to play a part in the Back Room any more. I have always regarded you as a stalwart amongst us and read your posts with interest. The BR will be diminished without you, but thank you for your contributions and accept my best wishes for whatever you will be focusing on in the future.

Best regards,

Chris

It does seem (unless I'm misinterpreting your words) that you don't intend to play a part in the Back Room any more.

As others have advised, I will avoid contributing to "futile" discussions, perhaps where the writer is after attention/controversy.

I am sure at some point i can update on how the Sportage is doing, but yes, my contributions will be limited somewhat. Others too come and go...

Perhaps that will change, perhaps not.

But I still read the forum.......

ORB - Avant

Yes, do please keep in touch, ORB. We need more people like you whose contributions are always concise and constructive.

Anyone whose post has aready gone on for half a page (or half a screenful) has got to ask themselves 'Have I really got anything more to say that's useful?'

Whe I used to run courses on effective writing, I would always begin and end wth 'THINK OF THE READER'.

To be fair, the great majority of us do.

ORB - John F

Seems I missed the offending contretemps, but am pleased ORB has recovered. This site needs all the input it can get to avoid being just a chat-room for 'stalwarts', pleasant enough (usually) though it is. Despite isolating, I write this on the third day of a mystery fever - 38.5C at present. Might see if a test is available tomorrow. Hope young Rovergirl is coping - can't be easy on the front line. Talking of banning, whatever happened to 'skidpan'? I (almost) miss his debating style.....

As we have now established that I am alive Could Avant perhaps close the thread?

I agree leave it open, can't see a reason to lock it... I agree, John go seek some advice!!!

I think I too would be a little embarrassed to have a thread whose title was me. So I'll close it but in doing so wish both ORB and John F a full recovery.
