has any experienced problems with their gear box. I have a 2018 plate 1.4 TFSI black edition s tronic and have been advised by my dealer that because I did not change the gear oil at the correct time/miles has caused a fault meaning a new main control gear box unit ECU is required (not covered under warranty due to me not changing the oil at the correct time doh and at a 2k cost). I have now been advised that the dealer requires a further £5800 for replacing all oil control valves because the main new £2000 ECU fitted will not calibrate with the gear oil valves. Would or should they have known this at the time they carried out their diagnostics to the original fault.

I would be most grateful if anyone has had any similar issues like this they can share and how they best took action with this.

Plenty of owners have had issues with the VAG DSG gearbox, including myself 13 years ago and 13 years later they are proving to be a nice income generator for main dealers.

Oil changes are critical and always have been, I assume you are covering high miles for the mileage to have been covered in a couple of years?

Unfortunately you either believe the dealer or you find someone else who can fix these gearboxes.

What’s your mileage? Recommended gearbox oil change is 40 k .

I don't understand why not changing the oil would have any effect on the ECU which is a bit of electronics?

In common with most auto/dsg/ Multitronic boxes , the electronics sit in the gearbox and submerged in the oil . Over time , the oil becomes degraded and can corrode the circuit board.

AFAIK vag 1.4tsi engines are fitted with the DQ200 7 speed dry clutched DSG box. These are a sealed for life unit that do not require an oil change nor is any specified. They are riddled with poor design and manufacturing quality issues and a number of service campaigns over the years have been quietly carried out during regular servicing to try and improve reliability. In some countries VAG has had to extended the DSG warranty to 5 or 7 years following multiple failures (Australia/China) But they still have a high failure rate, usually the mechatronics unit.

In this case the Op is simply being fleeced by his garage, the DSG is covered by the standard Audi 3 year warranty. Contact AUDI customer services, complain and get a case number raised, talk directly to AUDI, not with the dealer

They might be inclined take the customers money and still get Audi to cough for a warranty repair, thereby making mega profit. Highly immoral and illegal.

BTW The cost of replacing a Mechatronics unit at Skoda/VW is usually in the region of £1500-£1800 (out of warranty). Cheaper at an independent.

PPS there are no such things as "oil control valves" that would cost £5800. All the hydraulic control and solenoid valves are contained in the mechatronics unit along with the electronics, TCU (transmission control unit, not called an ECU).

Thanks Brum. the information you have provided has been really useful. I have raised a case number with Audi UK and await their reply. I just hope they will admit and replace FOC or I have a battle on me hands

In common with most auto/dsg/ Multitronic boxes , the electronics sit in the gearbox and submerged in the oil . Over time , the oil becomes degraded and can corrode the circuit board.

The oil/electronics issue only affects early DQ200 dry boxes. The mechatronics unit uses its own seperate and totally different hydraulic oil to the main gearbox where the gears are. Early units used a synthetic hydraulic oil which contained additives including sulphur iirc that at elevated temperatures reacted and degraded the solder and/or insulation on the TCU board/wiring which is integral to the unit causing them to fail somewhat predictably. Following a service campaign (around 2014 iirc) the oil was changed to a mineral type hydraulic oil to address this issue. However because of the thousands of failures in hot climate countries, VAG were forced to repair failed units FOC and extend DSG warranties to as much as seven years in those countries. Uk did not benefit from this extension but the service campaign was carried out without customers knowledge during routine service. Many customers were forced to pay for repairs if the mechatronics failed out of the standard 3yr UK warranty.

AFAIK There are no such issues of oil/electronics in the other wet clutch DSG boxes. Wet boxes require a dsg oil/filter change at 40,000 miles. Starting sometime in 2018 or 2019, some (but not all) WET box variants now have a 80,000 mile service regime, but only in units manufactured after a certain date.

General consensus is that WET boxes are reasonably reliable, the DQ200 however continues to have a much higher failure rate, not only mechatronic, but clutch packs and gearbox internal selector forks. Rule of thumb is that engines developing less than or equal to 250nm max torque get the DQ200. 1.0tsi, 1.2tsi, 1.4tsi and 1.6tdi. Audi call them tfsi engines but they are the same engines.

As far as "calibration" is concerned, its known that some mechatronics units dont work with some gearboxes, having different mechanical tolerances, and need to be carefully matched, serial nos, part nos etc especially if the clutch pack is worn.. Sometimes dealers have to try more than one replacement before they work properly iirc.

I'm a little over the 40 K mileage. Current mileage is 43k

As I stated I think it has a DQ200 (dry clutch) box and it does not require any regular servicing, no oil change, nada. They are a sealed for life box.

Unlikely, but even if for some obscure reason you did have a Wet clutch Box (6 speed) then VAG would allow a small leeway on servicing interval. In a court of law, it is obvious that a 2 year old car shouldn't break down to the tune of requiring £8000 worth of repairs, whilst still in warranty, just 8 percent over the recommended service interval. The gearbox was clearly not fit for purpose and consumer protection law should apply.

I doubt a complete new original Audi box would cost that much to be fitted at a dealer.

Be forceful, tell Audi UK that you think this car is fitted with a DQ200 box that has no servicing requirement and that the dealer appears to be incompetent and dishonest.

Thanks Brum,

I have registered my complaint and Audi UK are on the case. AGAIN the info you have provided will no doubt assist me with this and is much appreciated. Once I have a full answer I will add to the forum for everyone else to see who is unlucky to experience the same issue with a new car.

Hi Brum

I have just found out that my car has a wet clutch box DL382 mechatronics system. if this is a 6 speed system the spec I received with my car states 7 speed...Does this sound correct to you ?

Again your assistance and advice would be greatly apreciated

Audi A4 - Multi-tronics gear box issues - brum

Oh dear, my mistake. I had forgotten that your A4 is fitted with its engine longitudinally (as opposed to transverse). In that case then yes it has the DL382 inline wet box.

What more can I say? Was your car otherwise serviced on time? If so, at the last sevice before 40,000 (might be 38,000 for Audi) miles were you informed of the need to change the oil in the DSG box and you declined? If not then tell Audi UK the dealer neglected to inform you or perform the required servicing.

What has Audi UK's response been?

I still find the prices quoted way over the top even for a replacement gearbox. I would be inclined to Google DSG specialists and contact them and obtain opinions and quotes for repairs to compare.

I feel greatly for you, it has certainly made me discount any possibility of buying an Audi with that attitude to customers. 3000 miles over 40000 is not massive.

Thanks Brum,

Audi's response has been to side with the dealer though have still not answered all my questions ref the original issue where I was charged 1200 pound upfront which apparently needs another gbox ecu, as per the note I received below from Poole Audi service manager =

“So regarding the control unit, previous test plan required a new gbox ecu fitted, fitment c/o and coding c/o ok, during the basic settings and calibrations for the oil valves the gearbox oil temperature control valve would not calibrate to the new ecu, tried several times but would not proceed, after 10 attempts gearbox was left to cool down and retest, there is a tip available regarding this issue after 20 tries the ecu will lock out and req a whole new mechatronics, issue is down to quality deviations in the valves on the body itself.”

“Another 10 attempts were c/o and after the 20th there was no success with calibrating this valve so the gearbox ecu will not allow us to continue any further and a new mechatronics with ecu is required to get the vehicle back on the road again

Audi A4 - Multi-tronics gear box issues - brum

The tip they refer to is likely to be a TSB - technical service bulletin

www.audicomplaints.com/models/a4/tsbs/

Reading their reply it seems to me the dealer ignored instructions or advice given in the TSB that they would render the ecu u/s if they tried to calibrate too many times. Their fault not yours. They seem to now be claiming to have taken £1200 as a testing fee rather than a repair. Was that made clear to you before they carried out the work?

"issue is down to quality deviations in the valves on the body itself"

This statement from Audi indicates a (production) quality issue. I believe this is a known issue where the ecu/mechatronics sometimes have to be matched to the gearbox and compatibility with replacements is not always possible without trying several. In my simple mind I believe you are not responsible for Audi's quality issues. Furthermore I still regard the car is in warranty and unless you were warned that a dsg service is required (and not recommended) with the consequence of total invalidation of warranty I cannot see Audi's stance standing up in court especially as you hardly went over the mileage recommendation.

Phone a different dealer, and ask how much a replacement gearbox costs and ask them how much a new Mechatronics unit costs.

I do not believe a new mechatonics unit costs as much as has been quoted by your dealer.

Phone the dsg independent I linked to earlier and discuss your issue with them. They will know more than me and advise.

It is simply not acceptable to quote for a repair, then claim the repair is not successful and demand an excessive amount to continue. What guarantee is there that they can repair it even after the next attempt and several thousand pounds?

Not fit for purpose, Consumer Rights Act 2015 needs to be mentioned in written correspondence with Audi. Shout loud and repeatedly.

Prepare the ground for legal redress, consider the small claims court route which is fairly cheap.
