No VAG DSG/kangerooing problems or any relating to German makes of car either. Hmmm.

On 1st March issue in the Telegraph VAG kangarooing was mentioned and also the fuel grades. All in the one article!! Whatever next? It reminds me of the old chestnut. Getting fed up with reading about XYZ? Stop reading!!

It's more that the new HJ website owners have links to VAG and suddenly all the 'Agony Column' on this website (different to the Telegraph) both isn't written by HJ and has not one person writing/emailing in with a complaint of significance (the Golf owner with the 'hologram issue' isn't) about a German car manufacturer, when normally at least one (or often quite a few more) such complaint arises on that front per week.

This weeks 'column' seems to be a very 'milktoast' affair with very little specifics. Many of us have serious concerns that some form of censorship favourable to the new site owners will be instituted. IMHO The Telegraph already does this by regularly deleting reader commentary that is critical (and by no means nasty or off point) of its content, including from people and views actually support the supposed paper's political leaning.

This sort of thing is happening more and more in today's electronics-lead media. We should keep our eyes peeled in case this happens here.

Long before the Internet most cars sold in the UK were British and the main source of independent assessment was the road tests in Autocar and Motor. However, they needed to avoid upsetting the manufacturers lest the supply of test cars dried up.

Their writers developed a unique way of reporting faults as apparent benefits - very useful if you understood the code. I have long forgotten real examples but poor brakes (quite common in those days) would be reported something like "no danger of skidding no matter how hard the brake pedal is pressed".

Perhaps writers on here will now need to learn the same skill when commenting on VW Group products.

Given the significant drop-off in the quality of the journalists and content in the so-called 'broadsheet' (actual and former) serious newspapers, mirroring that in the tabloids 10 years before and in the magazine world, this will be an uphill battle, especially as many younger people don't learn proper 'real life' skills (including thinking for yourself, critiquing constructively and taking criticism with always taking offence) such as those you referred to on modern-day college courses. I noticed this with those younger engineers following me from college.

On a similar subject, I've just been watching a YT video about them suppressing views they don't like, and not even extremist content but ordinary commentary and journalism from respected people on both sides of the political aisle.

Hello Andy, sorry if you formed the impression that I was being flippant about your comments. far from it. But you must laugh at some of this or you would cry! The media has always been good at this sort of behaviour. If the forum is now controlled by a media group with vested interests then there is little we can do except keep on expressing our views honestly. I fully agree that an honest opinion on a product, VAG or otherwise is worth airing and should not be stifled. If they can't face genuine criticism then they should not have joined the human race, never mind make motor cars. As for newly qualified engineers. It has long been the case that Universities look upon under graduates as 'consumers' or customers'. In which case they will not readily upset them by robust and open debate about most subjects. Instead the readily acceptable and PC opinions of the day will be offered and no debate as to their authenticity will take place. Makes for a poor education in my view. Meanwhile, back at the thread, the minute the forum is 'edited' to remove a genuine and politely put critique of any product is the moment that I for one, will shuffle off and do something else. VAG or V power fuel notwithstanding, this forum is still good with reasonably balanced views and opinion. Long may it remain as such.

Cheers Concrete

No problem, mate and I quite agree with your comments! The non-critical magazine or online media outlet is a feature of modern life, whether you're buying a cinema ticket, a boiler or a computer/phone.

As Misar said, journalists who want to be remembered in a favouriable light need to learn creative ways of criticising a product without directly saying so. A tough ask though, given how easy (and financially lucrative) it is to succumb to the almighty $ or £, especially when your boss is saying water down that article otherwise Joe Bloggs Inc won't run their ad on our site.

I just hope this and the few other remaining islands of honesty (literally) and common sense don't either disappear or morph into the MSM blob. I still find it amazing how many forums and independent websites on a whole range of subjects have just petered out in the last 10 years or so - less and less discussion, so more people are completely unaware of what's actually good and what's not, as evidenced on these pages regularly by the sheer number of unbelievably niave punters.

Motor magazine criticised several cars over the decades. Including Bristol Motors. No more test cars, ever again. Bristol went bust last month. Sad.

I don't read the Telegraph but presumably the real HJ is only able to continue using his nom de plume there with the agreement of the new owners of the website. He registered "Honest John" as a trademark owned by honestjohn.co.uk ltd. When he owned the company he could give himself permission to use it anywhere but now it is not so simple.

Even more interesting, the company probably also owns the rights to that photo with the hat!
