VW GOLf 1.9 TDI - Advice on selling my VW Golf - Jambo 51

HI

Due to retirement I am selling my Golf TDI it was first registered July 2008 and is almost 12 yrs old. I have personally owned it for almost 10 yrs it has a full service history and 11 months MOT the mileage is 77k. Honest John have valued the car at £2400 and We buy any car.com around £2000 although they have yet to see the car.

Here comes the question ....

Over the last few months I have noticed the back seat is damp and with increased moisture in cabin there is a lot of condensation on the inside of the windows.

My mechanic who regularly services the car says its a coachwork problem possibly and more likely to be a seal that is faulty - this is more likely with older cars as the seals ware with age. He also says that taking car to a body shop/coachworks could be expensive.

To be honest I think the car is just in average condition albeit with a low mileage.

I have no inclination to investigate the problem and just wish to move on and sell the car.

So rather than getting the problem fixed before selling how much should I reduce the car price by after informing any prospective purchaser of the problem.

Perhaps a difficult question to answer but if I can get an idea that would help.

Thanks in advance ...

If you have any doubts about the car sell it to a dealer rather than suffer the hassle of selling it yourself. Call small local dealers to see if they’re interested and tell them you’ve been offered £2,000 by WBAC. It’s good stock for them and any dampness issues will be theres to find and sort so keep quiet about it.

Many cars suffer from damp and condensation in the winter months. Sell to a garage or WBAC,. less stress.

Assuming you are going to buy something else-then without doubt just trade it in. You might get what WBAC are potentially offering--so fine. . It will depend of course on what you want to buy next?

At the dealership-deal with the buying aspect first. Once you have made your choice and looked at the finance options/costs-then ask what they would offer you in part exchange.

Do NOT -repeat NOT-start your sales discussions with "what will you give me in part exchange for my car".

Indeed - essential advice. What they will offer you in PX is very dependent on what they are going to sell you, and what their margins are likely to be.

You don't get owt for nowt.

A lot of people just want a reliable basic car to get to work and your car seems to fit the bill - FSH and long MoT. I would sell it privately at £2199 and be prepared to knock £200 off. Just note 'possible minor water leak into rear of car'. There'll be plenty of blokes happy to spend a Sunday experimenting with a hose pipe. Probably nothing a tube of silicone won't fix. Just don't sell it to a young single mother with two kids.

I bet WBAC will pitch in well below their online offer. That's just to get you interested.

If you plan to sell privately, which I would guess is well worth a try - it will be worth making some effort to dry the car out, or at least investigate the cause. What is under those damp seats? If there is a noticeable puddle, it is more than just condensation, and probably a leak round the tailgate or a door. Was a window left ajar ?

It will be much easier to sell a dry car than a damp one.

Such a common problem with the golf.

Have you had problems with the door window at any stage, or had the door cards off for any repairs? The inner panel when removed has stick on rubber seal to stop ingress of water running into the car. Take panelling off and reseal with a good silicone mastic to the lower half.

Also, is sunroof fitted, if so drain holes blocked, again easy fix with strimmer cord.

All fixable with a search on Google....
