Volkswagen Passat - 09 1.9 Passat TDI shuddering/vibration 4th gear - Damo89

Hi All,

Not much of a car expert so would really appreciate some suggestions/advice on how to approach this issue.

Recently bought a 09 Passat Blue motion 1.9 TDI 105 bhp (BLS engine). Over the past few days starting to notice shuddering when I shift up to 4th gear hitting around the 40/45 mph mark. Continues to shudder as I continue to accelerate(not body shaking but can feel it somewhat through the seats floor and steering wheel). Once I shift to 5th the shuddering significantly reduces but can still feel vibration. Stops when I take foot off the gas and when I hit about 60 and maintain speed. I know these aren't nippy engines by any means but the car also feels unresponsive and struggling to accelerate in these gears. 1st to third seem fine. No vibrations knocks or noises in general from the engine when idling. No problem with revs in neutral. No grinding from the clutch or gearbox so far but clutch is very jumpy/sensitive.

Not sure if the above is much to go on but if anyone had advice on where to look first or narrow it down it would be a massive help

I'd first suspect a worn dual mass flywheel for the vibration. As for your poor acceleration a faulty mass air flow sensor could be the cause.

What is the rev counter doing in the higher gears? - Could this be a slipping clutch, this tend to show up in higher gears to start with and can explain the loss of power in higher gears.

The 1.9 pd (even the 105) is a very tourquey engine and should pull well in all gears. I had the 1.9 pd 100 in a Skoda Superb and it tugged this barge along amazingly well considering.
