Is it just me or do others frequently have to stop themselves from being passed off with the wrong parts.? I feel sorry for independents..

Today I wanted 2 bumper trim clips which are basically a small screw and a plastic plug. I went to the main dealer and showed the parts dept a picture of the fitting which also clearly showed its location. He had no idea what I was showing him and insisted that a completely differed fitting was the correct one. I pointed out he was wrong and this fitting was for another location. Resisting the temptation to say "you are a m****" I left with two completely different fittings which I made fit with a bit of drilling.

Another clip was looking a bit rusty so the department offered to get me 2 at £6.80 each, I declined as they are available from Germany for just over £3 with minimal postage.

At another main dealer I asked for a "block drain plug washer". I was told there is no such thing on my car. I had my wifes car with me at the time so I was unable to point it out.. I do have a block drain plug but the parts department are adamant that I do not.

Trouble is if the useless main dealer cant supply the part it creates a lot of hassle for us consumers and doesn't bother them in the slightest.

Rant over

The days of the parts dept. being staffed by blokes in brown overalls has sadly gone to be replaced by someone in a shirt and tie. Nearly always totally clueless. I'd love to take a part, dripping with dirty oil into the glass palace and drop it on the desk in the showroom which passes for the parts dept. now. "One of these please".

The other annoying thing is nearly everything has to be ordered.

Not the case at my local Audi Dealer.

Email response with highlighted part with cost and delivery . Overnight delivery if ordered before 1600 hrs. Two days if sent from Germany. Very impressed but all customers treated the same no matter what the age of the vehicle.

Maybe Parts dept of French makers overwhelmed by demand especially electronic dashboards which apparently are so unreliable on a certain make they are kept as a stock item.

All I do for the Honda Jazz is go to the online parts diagrams from Honda, print it out, take it to the Parts guy and ask him for teh highlighted parts...

see: https://www.parts-honda.uk/honda-cars/JAZZ/2012/14ES/23006

Excellent service. Even a dummy like me can get it right.

You should always be able to get the correct part if you can tell the dim person behind the parts counter the VIN of your vehicle. I have owned Pugs for 30 years (admittedly usually not-new ones) and have always been able to find a part number from the Club Peugeot UK (cue ad-blocker :-) ) website if other routes fail. After that, E-bay is often a good source, as you probably know.

Good job i can read upside down and/or back to front, went in for the only part that wears on the automatic seat belt presenter (pushes the belt out on an arm) on my old MB coupe.

Glass palace of course, the local dealer boasting besmocked proper parts chaps closed down, bod in suit in showroom tells me i have to buy the whole mechanism @ several hundred smackers, i pointed out the relevant part with its own part number which he couldn't apparently see, £16.

With French cars always found its best to take the old part you need replacing if possible to pair up, even things like brake pads can be a nightmare, multiple possible fitments for the same vehicles, most makes have maybe two possibles but with French its always several.

It is just so frustrating that I had a perfect picture of the part and its location but was told it didn't exist! I accept that there could be a superseded part but definitely not the part he supplied at a cost of just over £4 for 2, I have since seen a company supplying 10 for £ 3.58. Its not the cost I simply want to fit the correct part and get back to drinking coffee.

Went onto the owners web site and they simply fit an oversized self tapper. I would rather fit the correct plastic part and don't like sticking a large screw in front of my front tyres.

As alluded to by others it was a pristine surface at the back of the show room without a computer in sight. Years ago staff would show you the screen on the micro fiche or computer screen and you could simply point at the part obviously that was far to simple.

Honda site sounds great. If Peugeot did such a thing I would never go near a main dealer again. I don't have anything against main dealers but like to deal with "enthusiastic experts"

Register yourself an account at public.servicebox.peugeot.com - it says it's for independent traders, and you need a VAT number, but it can be anything.... you can then do the searching and just ask the parts dept for the part number.

Yes please, although a modern parts dept that is online, can use the vehicle registration for most things, as the only bits that the parts man ahould see are those for your specific vehicle.

Paper parts catalogues went out he door in the 90's

Microfilms not long after, and CD roms, followed too.

So, when the system goes down....

Those are just the things that CPUK still has access to. And Dean Hunter at Peugeot Parts in Yorkshire too I'm sure.

I kept everything.. And I am sure that there are a shedload of jaguar/rover/range rover parts still in the cellar many of them dating from the 80's 90's

I'd a 1974 Mini. Things wore out fast, as with all British Leyland cars. At 18 months old the clutch thrust release bearing got very noisy. Took it to the local Buxton dealer and asked for a replacement. No, they have beendiscontinued, you can't get them any more.I lost my rag and said was my 18month old cat to end on the scrapheap. A shrug ofshoulders wasthereply.Luckily his colleague was listeningand produced thedifferentlydesigned replacement.

The car in question is a Peugeot 107 and the same part is used in the Aygo and C1 so you could hardly call it a rare part!

Old Rover Boy and I obviously share the same reluctance to dispose of "useful" car related stuff. A new Saab / Vauxhall air con compressor that I shall never use, 207 Hub lock nut, 106 wheel bearing etc etc

I have a vision of being lowered into my gave by a fork truck on a pallet surrounded by items to good to throw away.

Shame there isn't a charity that will accept parts like they do with mobile phones etc

It might be interesting to pop into the Toyota parts dept and see if they are more helpful.

So blindingly obvious I don't know why I didn't just do that! Even more ironic when you consider I have just taken delivery of 5ltrs of coolant from a Toyota dealer this morning to complete the job. I drained the coolant when changing a water pump and poured it back in until the new stuff arrived,

Think it was beyond my comprehension that a so called "expert" at a Peugeot dealership couldn't just say "oh yes we get through loads of these in the workshop every time a front bumper comes off. No need to even look up the part number" etc I cant imagine what a load of hassle it would have been if I didn't own possibly the most common car on the road if you include C1 / Aygo.

I've had mixed results from Peugeot too.

Cheshire glass palace showroom - too posh for an actual parts department, and they looked down on me for having the audacity to buy parts and fit them myself. I'm sure their customers must have "a man" to do those things from them. And wouldn't sell me an individual dash bulb, I must buy the entire box.

But the parts department at dealers in Liverpool or on the Wirral have been brilliant. AND they let me buy individual bulbs!

I'd recommend signing up for Peugeot Servicebox online. Its free and gives you access to parts diagrams and numbers. Then just give the dealer a call or email and ask them to get you a part.

The good thing I've noticed is that the ones round me do this without wanting money up front.

There's also a great Peugeot Citroen dealer near Chorley who sells parts on Ebay. His service is outstanding.

Worth knowing, Gibbo. I always ask the chairman of CPUK, who used to work for Peugeot and lives in south Liverpool. He has a lot of stuff.

Similar to me in 1992 (ish) with a 2 year old Ford Fiesta. The exhaust split and we could not get a new one as Ford had changed the design just after the new model was changed and ours was apparently one of a few hundred that used a particular design.

Local indi exhaust place did a grand job of sourcing one at the same price quoted originally but refused to fit it until the problem of why the old exhaust failed had been rectified....

There were no engine mounts on the offside of the engine which meant that every time you pulled away the engine rose up, putting strain on the exhaust which caused it to crack.

Ford didn't care one iota.

hyundia same, speak to two lady receptionists they have to and find the spares guy . nothing in stock. all over priced. they just want you to book your car in
