Interesting insight from Avant from when he learned to drive. I had my lessons in a 1964 Vauxhall Viva and practiced, with 'L' plates affixed, in a company van when out and about working. A Bedford CF with column change and three gears. What simple vehicles they were. Had 6 lessons at 17 shillings and sixpence a lesson and the seventh lesson was my test which was the lesson fee plus £1 for the test. Passed first time. Happy days in 1967. The whole lot for £7.12.5p in new money. Cheers Concrete

Learned in a Hillman Imp in 1971. Think the lessons were about £1.50 and I had 17 (one for each year as the theory of the time suggested) and then the test which I luckily passed, only the lord knows how.

Problem was in our area there was a 5 month wait thus you really needed to book your test the moment you were 17, if you waited until you could drive it would cost you loads in extra lessons. Those unfortunates who failed then had another long wait and more lessons before they could hopefully take to the road.

IIRC my lessons and the 1961 test were in a school Mini, and topped up with practice in SWMBO's Mini-van. We weren't married then, so my driving can't have been too awful.

I learned to drive in a 3rd gen Honda Civic 1.5GT(!). Purely by chance i hasten to add, it was actually my Dad that booked the 1st lesson. He had been working near this particular driving school and approached them knowing i had been thinking about lessons anyway. I had no idea what i'd be driving till the instructor turned up, needless to say i was well chuffed!.

Started driving in autumn 1962 when I turned seventeen. Never had lessons, except one (just before my test in 1963) from a mate the same age as me whose parents had paid for lessons and who knew the route the test would take.

Practised in my mother's three-wheeler (Messerschmitt). As it wasn't a car, no accompanying driver was necessary, but as it had reverse I could drive a car after passing my test*, which I did first time.

*(An anomaly which I think was rectified shortly after.)

I learned and took my test in a Pug 205 1.9D in 1992 whilst on my summer break/job experience period before I went to college. Great little car for visibility and handling, easy to drive. If I recall, by lessons cost £13ph, but I can't remember what I paid for the test, which I passed at the first attempt.

I didn't drive again for about 6 years (at college then saving up) and was quite rusty when I bought my first car, a mid 90s Nissan Micra. I do remember how cheap fuel was back in those days, at least half what it is today! Made up for by my insurance being twice the price back then!

I miss the 90s.

Morris Minor in 1961. Lessons were about 17/6 I think. Once I'd passed bought an Austin 10, traded up to an A40 Devon after a couple of years.

What is hard to believe is that I could then drive to Sheffield (about 28 miles) in 45 minutes, now it takes 58 minutes in a car with three times the power, disc brakes, etc etc.

This is not so much because of more traffic, but because of extra sets of traffic lights and reduced limits on a good proportion of the roads which were then unrestricted (and enforced by cameras!).

Amazing memories some people have - i haven't a clue what i paid, or how many lessons i had. Did pass first time though.

Taught by driving instructor from the local Fire Brigade, doing a "foreigner", and using his own vehicle, officially a Thames 307E van, otherwise a Ford Anglia 105E van.

4 speed floor change gearbox, synchromesh only on 2,3 and 4 and how i learned to parallel park !

Day of my test i was supposed to use that van, but for some reason (memory loss again !) it became unavailable at the last minute.Told my foreman when i got to work, he had a word with the manager, and i was allowed to use one of the company cars, an HA Vauxhall Viva which i had never even sat in before, the test centre was only about quarter mile away from work, so - off we go, me driving, (foreman then walked back to work - "you'll be ok")

On the test i was so nervous that for about the first 20 minutes i had severe shakes in my left leg (ideal for clutch control !)

First car i ever drove (a surprise 17th birthday present) was my dad's Victor FB, with the 3 speed column change and front bench seat, replaced eventually by a Victor FD which my dad bemoaned evermore as the worst car he ever owned.

My best story re " what did you learn to drive in?? " is an ex colleague who aged 15 saved up and bought an old Cortina, parked it up at least two streets away from where he lived (so his dad wouldn't find out) and got away with running it for about 18 months until he moved on, ( surprisingly i think young ladies figured somewhere in the scenario) and yes - he also passed first time !

...was in my final year at Birmingham Art College (enjoying a rather pleasant summer) when I decided to sign-up for 10 lessons with BSM (on The Parade at Sutton Coldfield where I had digs) for £20.00.

Graduated, returned to Yorkshire, applied for the test on arrival in my home town, received a date, went out in Dad's Austin 1300 a few times in the preceding weeks, fortunately passed first attempt.

The rest is history...

A brand new Mini Metro to start.

The teacher was sooo concerned about incorrect gear changes damaging his car I was a nervous wreck at the end of each lesson.

Mum recommended her teacher, by then retired, but persuaded to do one more as a favour.

He had a huge Rover P5 3l. Easy car to drive, the engine was so powerful it almost didn't matter what gear you were in!

He had a wonderful teaching style and was so laid back it made learning to driving a pleasure.

Making me feel young. I was lucky to have fairly affluent parents, My first car, a 1989 F MG Metro was bought for me in 1993 by my car daft dad. He let me decide, largely to teach a life lesson I think. I chose this over the tidy 88 E VW Jetta 1.3 or the 88 E Rover 213S that I should’ve bought. I was blinkered by a rev counter and some red piping into buying what had been an office pool car. It had been ragged stupid and certainly had seen the insides of more than a few local hedges. Terrible thing but it did teach me plenty and it was exactly 1mph faster than my mates 1985-C MG Metro.

I'm sure we've done this before, more than once!!

I learnt / took test in my Dad's Citroen Visa 11 Super E (SDL 20X) on the Isle of Wight - 1st time pass, 9th March 1992. Both me Sisters (one older, one younger) also learnt and passed in the same car. Mostly taught by my Dad, with a couple of polishing lessons from an ADI friend. By the time my younger sister did hers it was 12 years old well over 100k miles, the clutch was well past its best, and syncho on 1st and 2nd was hit and miss!!

Received wisdom on the IOW was that you came back round the Coppins Bridge roundabout (more lights and lanes than you can shake a stick at) on the way back to the centre if the examiner thought you were good enough. On my test day the lights between the bus station and Safeway were not working - we went direct from the test centre, turned right at the non-working lights, then down onto Coppins Bridge, before even doing emergency stop up Staplers Road (all of which means nothing to anybody, unless there are any Caulkheads here!).

I learned in a variety of vehicles- predominantly a Fiat Uno, but also a Honda Accord, Volvo 940 and (once) a Bentley Mk VI.... that was fun given the suicide doors, gearbox by the right hand of the seat and no power steering! You could pull away in 3rd though... Took 5 lessons in a hateful BSM Metro, took the test and failed in that, then did a bit more practice and took the test in the Uno and passed. Lots of driving between lessons was the key- I only had 6 paid for lessons.

Mine was a red A reg Metro. Getting it into reverse was always a challenge as the lever had to be rammed into the side of the driver's seat before it would engage. Quality. Passed first time despite a panic at a box junction (I'd not encountered one before). I'll always remember my instructor driving me home. I was so tempted to tell him to pull over for a lecture as he barrelled along a 30mph road at an indicated 50. He'd have crucified me had I done the same. Mind you, his parting words were "you've passed your test, now go out and learn how to drive".

Some fabulous memories. Brings a smile to my face. All those old cars we thought were the bees knees. The excitement of driving, especially when out courting. Someone did mention however the motorbike test. I passed my driving test when I was 19. Previously though I had a series of bikes, which obviously helped with the road awareness when driving a car. So 6 lessons nailed it for me. The bikes though were great. There were quite few apprentices who had them and we would clean and maintain them after work or in breaks. Great fun at the time. A James Captain 197, a BSA Ambassador 250 then a BSA Gold Star 500. In many ways it was the best way to get to work because we did a lot of site work as well as workshop. Lots of freedom too. Great days, sadly not to be repeated, and happy times mostly.

Car/driving mad so at age 15, my dad took me up to Tockwith Aerodrome near Ripon, to practice in his Cortina Mk III 1600 XL. This would be 1977

The next year I would practice along a private lane in the Great Yorkshire showground in his horrible Marina 1.8. My dad taught me how to double de-clutch and blip the throttle on a downchange to match road speed with engine revs.

Had proper lessons (6 @ £3.50) in a grey metallic Chrysler Sunbeam 1.6 GLS, the one with the suede seats, which felt quite refined compared to the Marina!

After passing 3 months after I turned 17, would borrow my mums Renault 6 TL until I bought a 1972 Austin 1100 a few months later. The double de-clutching skill was useful with this car to avoid the inevitable crunch going into second from third gear - worn synchromesh.

1n 1985, was observed and took my Advanced Test with a Class 1 police driver in my dad's VW Derby 1.3 GLS (Polo with a boot, felt like a poor man's BMW 3 series to drive!)

A mk1 Cortina. I had 12 lessons for my 17th birthday in 1968. Each lesson cost £1 but the driving school did a course of 12 for £11:10:00 (11:50 in new money). In between lessons, I practised in my Dad’s A60 and I passed my test in that car at the first attempt - probably in spite of rather than because of my Dad!

Shortly after my first couple of lessons the mk1 Escort was introduced and the driving school got one. However, I couldn’t get on with it; the steering wheel felt as though it was in my lap, the clutch was featherlight and the pedal travel was further than on the Cortina so I soldiered on with the older car. Meanwhile the press (and my Dad) were raving about the Escort, but it wasn’t until I became a more accomplished driver that I came to understand why. In its day, it was a cracking little car.

what did you learn to drive in?? - John Boy

In 1964 I had 7 lessons in a Triumph Herald and passed 1st time. My parents didn't own a car so that was my only experience of driving one. A month later, I broke my leg in a motorcycle accident and was unable to drive anything for 2 years. Then, because of my leg injuries, I was advised to retake my test. I had 3 lessons in a VW Beetle and passed again. This time, however, my license was restricted to 3.5 ton vehicles rather than 7.5 tons. When I renewed my license at 70 I discovered I'd failed to notice that, at some point, the restriction had been removed.

One reason I passed the car test with just a few lessons is that, from the age of 11, I'd done lots of tractor driving in school holidays. I drove them on the road with L plates as soon as I was allowed. Much of that was on main roads with 2 or 4 wheel trailers. When they had high loads I remember using a pitchfork to do right turn signals! At that time, farm tractors and trailers were not equipped with indicators.

Another reason is that I had 3 uncles who were lorry drivers. I loved travelling in the cab with them and, from a young age, knew exactly what pedals to press and when. When I finally got behind the wheel of a car I just had to unlearn most of the double declutching.

A Datsun Sunny 120Y, which belonged to my driving instructor and I loved driving it. Passed my test, at the first try in 1980.

To be honest, I was in a Vocal Harmony trio and we had a Summer Season where we were travelling 1,000 miles over 10 days! During this time I can't honestly what I was driving but I was sharing the driving with one other person in the trio, so I was driving 500 miles over 10 days regularly before I passed my test lol. We were based in the Midlands so I regularly navigated spaghetti junction. No problem (if you know where your'e going!) So, I got lots of practice.

I did slide while doing my emergency stop, but the examiner asked me about it afterwards and I acknowledged my mistake. I passed so I guess that was ok.

It's a few years ago, I think my first lessons were in the Ford Escort, however I do recall later having lessons in the brand new Ford Fiesta.

Can't remember when I booked the test, but my first lesson was 1 - 2 days after my 17th birthday, and took the test 5 months later in a nearby venue which was the earliest possible option.

I do recall having just a few lessons then lots of practice driving parents around in mother's Datsun Cherry, often into the West End of London, great way to get practice and to learn navigation. (This was well before any 20 mph zones, roadside cameras or sat nav!).Nearer the test I had a few more lessons, to iron out any bad habits and to learn how to pass the test.

Passed first time, immediately put out to work as chauffeur for grandmother who did not drive!

All these years later I now drive around 20k miles a year, I actually would favour regular re-testing for everyone, say every 10 years, in a similar way to medics, airline pilots and other professionals are required to do CPD, I am sure road safety would improve.
