Interesting that you looked at the Kia Rio and Kia Sportage, quite a big step in size between those two. Did the Kia Ceed get any attention as the Ceed sits between the two in terms of size. Also, if you like the Sportage then Hyundai offer the Tucson but I have to say, it does appear that you’ve scored a good price on the Sportage.

Make sure you have a really good drive in the GDI before you buy it. When we bought the Pulsar I considered the Sportage T-GDI (dealer is only 1/2 a mile away) but since they did not have a turbo demo they loaned us a GDI for the day to enable us to get a feeling for the car.

It was glacially slow and needed loads of revs all the time, not a terribly pleasant experience, was glad to be back in the 12 year old Focus 1.6 TDCi which itself was no rocket ship.

The car itself was actually very nice and I am sure the T-GDI would have been loads better but the following day the wife had severe pain in her right hip that she blamed on the high seat position and firm bolsters. Pain soon went away and has never returned.

Tought me never to buy a car based on a 10 minte drive.

I echo the thoughts on the 1.6GDi. I owned a 2017 Sportage 2 with the same engine from new for 15 months and, whilst an excellent car in all other respects, the engine was woeful. Not at all capable enough given the size of the car. Oh, and there was significant clutch judder when cold. A 'characteristic', apparently.

I would totally agree with this. The Sportage GDI isn't a bad car, but nor is it a great one. How bad it is will depend on how you drive, and what you expect it to be able to do. The problem isn't so much a lack of power, but a lack of torque relative to its weight. The Sportage makes 161nm @ 4850rpm, whereas the MG ZS makes 141nm @ 4500rpm. But the MG (the basic 1.5 manual) weighs 300kg less than the Kia, which is a lot. And it isn't just a case of saying, "well i don't drive fast, so it doesn't matter". This position could work if the Kia was an auto, but as a manual, you'd constantly be changing gear and cursing the lack of torque!.

The X-Ceed is a bit higher off the ground, but for the very good price that ORB has negotiated one would get only a 1.0 rather than the 1.6 in the Sportage.

Pity about the MG XS: even in the hands of a clearly careful owner like ORB, reliability is still suspect. Sadly that's the one thing, apart from the octagon badge, that old and new MGs have in common.

Well done ORB. There is a deal out there for everyone in all circumstances. If you are happy with the deal and the vehicle suits your needs then it is sorted. Good luck. Cheers Concrete

Thanks to all for your comments.

I have now agreed the contract, Dealer said no need for a deposit, bring your px or deposit when you collect 1st week in march. There are some interest charges, but I am getting a brand new car with 2 free services and 2 years breakdown assistance for £8000 and my car, plus the Kia 7 year warranty and a Kia customer helpline that works... (have used them in the past)

AND the bonus of irritation gone away...

My MG dealer deserves a medal as they will buy the car back from me at a price that means my depreciation over 16 months is bearable. £146 a month in loss.

If only the car had been as good as the dealer!

The Kia has 16" wheels.. another bonus.. and is a quieter place to be...

I did floor the Kia when I test drove and it goes well enough for me.

Happy motoring all.

Reading this saga made me wonder about people's views on the best way to go about choosing a (brand) new car.

My approach is to do a thorough "paper" survey of specs, reviews, road tests and reliability reports to select what seems to be the best make/model for my needs. Then have a test drive of that precise vehicle to check whether there are any surprises and if it feels like a car I can live with.

You never really find out about a car until you own it (cf that MG) and there is no such thing as a perfect one, at any price. It seems to me that testing a whole group one after the other just adds to the confusion.

We look forward to hearing about your experience of owning the Kia. When my elderly Merc gives up the Sportage with that engine would interest me, I always enjoyed reading about your time with the MG.

I doubt your reviews on the big Kia will have much content beyond ‘nothing to report.’ These are well made cars that last well. Bit slow for some, the turbocharged motor is an option for them but I’m sure it’ll suffice. I certainly wouldn’t worry about speed in any great way. It’ll still sit at licence losing speeds all day long.

I too wouldn't worry about performance either, unless you go for the AWD turbo version and drive country roads at 3.30am as i do where you can enjoy driving still, there is so much traffic now in England that's there is no point.

Enjoy your new car ORB, pity the MG couldn't stay reliable enough in your careful use which doesn't bode well for more typical neglectful ownership.

Nice work ORB!

(And thanks to your feedback I will cross off the MG on my list of potential future purchases!)

My only question would be about the numbers: why not pay a bit more each month and reduce the final balloon payment? Handy if you’re thinking of buying the car at the end of the contract and equally handy if it gives you more equity in the car when you hand it back. I guess you will also pay less interest during the contract as well.

I laugh at the advertising that says we can buy car X for 99 quid/week. The length of contract, interest rate, & size of balloon payment are all set/manipulated to get an attractive figure for advertising!

I am making the maximum amount deposit contribution allowed. And £70 a month is less than I spend weekly on wine....

HIC!

Kia Sportage 2020 1.6gdi - PCP.... Choices follow on - oldroverboy.

The monthly payment is the maximum allowed too. Because my px is worth more than the deposit amount. I have already got £1675 towards the balloon payment and that means only £7000 ish final payment.

Presumably you could (if you so chose) have the deal that you've gone for - and then pay it off in cash within a day or so and keep the discounts?

Kia Sportage 2020 1.6gdi - PCP.... Choices follow on - Avant

Yes, you can. I haven't so far seen a PCP contact where (as there often is with other loans) a charge (for loss of interest on the outstanding loan) is made for settlement before a particular stage of the loan.

Ta for that, Avant. Appreciated.

Somewhat encouraging then.

On the face of it the deal was a good one and if you wanted to offload some spare cash from under the mattress, then what's not to lke?

I did mean to ask - did the Kia Niro get a look in during the above mentioned musings?

The Niro and Sportage seem to be much the same size. I wonder why Kia sell both, but they clearly know what they're doing as both sell well - no doubt to subtly different markets.

Hyundai have the Kona and Tucson - again, both seem to be successful. Actually I think those two are a bit more different in size: a Tucson looks quite a bit bigger.

They are, but you can say the same about most manufacturers, especially when it comes to the big money earners, SUV/crossover!.

Multiplying the length by its width for its footprint reveals the difference in size between the Niro and Sportage to be pretty much the same as the difference between an Audi Q3 and a Q5 (5% for the Kia's, 6% for the Audi's). Incidentally, the Audi Q2's footprint is only 5.5% bigger than the new A1 Citycarver. I remember you having mentioned Suzuki before, well the SX4 S-Cross is approx 4% bigger than the Vitara (so not much less a difference than that between the Audi's i mention). And the humongous (and hideous) new BMW X7 is only 5% bigger than the (as it turns out only slightly smaller and slightly less hideous) X5.
