Winter Sun driving holiday - mss1tw

Is it possible to get some winter sun with a ferry trip and a drive, rather than submitting myself to the unpleasantness of air travel? I do it often enough for my liking with work, and at least then I am getting paid for it.

Depends whether you want your sun to be hot or not. If you want it hot, you need to fly at least as far as the Canaries. If not, wait for a blue skies high pressure system and take a ferry to Dun Laoghaire to enjoy quiet Irish roads.

A ferry and 2 sensible days driving will have you down on the Costa brava or similar with decent daylight and fresh air even this time of year. We did just this in October and had a wonderful 2 weeks in and around the Pyrenees, perfect weather.

Interesting post I hadn't considered anything other than hot! Although I love getting out and about on colder sunny days, I can do that locally

A ferry and 2 sensible days driving will have you down on the Costa brava or similar with decent daylight and fresh air even this time of year. We did just this in October and had a wonderful 2 weeks in and around the Pyrenees, perfect weather.

Or if you didn't want to do that much driving to/from the destination, you can get a ferry from either Portsmouth or Plymouth right to Santander (That is what Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon did in the 3rd series of The Trip).

Though worth bearing in mind that the Bay of Biscay can be pretty rough in winter :-(

I once knew someone who lived in Majorca over winter. He would drive to Spain and get a ferry so he had his car for the time he was there.

There are also ferries from Spain to Tenerife if you want guaranteed sun, or for a shorter trip get over to Morocco.
