My 4 year old VW Golf GT broke down last week.

The part they claim was at fault costs around £80. However, it takes 5 hours to fit with dissembling the car etc. The main dealership I went to charges over £100 per hour for technician labour and so with two lots of diagnostics to find the fault and a few fixtures, the job cost me just under £700. Friends and family were horrified. Forum enthusiasts called me insane for going to them.

The issue is I have always had main dealership servicing and had hoped there would be a gesture of goodwill due to low milage and loyalty. However it was put down to wear and tear.

I also was apprehensive an independent garage may not have the kit or training to identify and tackle the problem. I once took an old car to an independent garage and the mechanic made the problem worse. I ended up paying twice when I eventually went to the main dealership.

How can I find a capable and trustworthy independent garage that are VW experts but don't charge such high rates or is this just not possible?

Many thanks

Your make specific forums are usually the best bet for finding good make specialist indies.

You can't compare a general all make indy garage with a make specialist, where the specialist indy beats the main dealer into dust is that the indy is concerned with saving you money, hence repairing things where possible and if they've found a way of condensing a 5 hour job into 1 hour, they'll charge accordingly, where the main dealer mechanic will make bonuses because you'll be charged full price regardless, most main dealers don't repair anything, they fit new parts.

1st thing i'd try would simply be Googling "VW service near me". This will almost certainly give you the nearest main dealer, but it should also give you some other options. You will have to sift through which, if any, of the results 'specialize' in VW, but with Google you should also get reviews.

2nd thing i'd try would be asking on a VW forum or owners club. Seeing as you mention forum enthusiasts, i'm assuming you are already a member of a VW forum?.

3rd and final suggestion, is to look at the ads in a VW magazine.

There is a huge VW following in this country, so unless you live somewhere very remote, i doubt you should have much trouble finding a VW specialist not too far away.

"If only everything in life were as reliable as a VW."

Unless the car has done mega miles, a £700 bill after just 4 years is why they can't offer a 5 year warranty like the Far East manufacturers. Too lucrative for them to make buyers pay.

Volkswagen Golf - Finding a Good Independent Garage? - Radam87

The car has done less than 28000 miles.

The car has done less than 28000 miles.

Which just goes to show what the maker and dealer think of their product, and customers.

EGR valve?, they all do that sir, but if it was the valve lots of people have had them done on a goodwill basis, hopefully you'll remember how important you were when it mattered when it comes time to buy another car, i'm annoyed enough for you.

They certainly exist - less than a mile from me in Cheshire is a decent bodyshop which also specialises in VAG repairs, charging about £50 an hour. Google or Yellow will turn up something, but word of mouth is the safest route. Ask around.

Could I please ask where abouts in Cheshire as I live close to Macclesfield.

Wrong end, I'm afraid - I live in Fr0dsham, about an hour away, so not worth the journey :-(

Have a look at the Good Garage Guide on this site (click on it right at the top of the page) and see if there are any good independent VW specialists within striking distance. They are likely to have considerably lower labour rates than the main dealers, who have their glass palaces to maintain.

Most large towns will have a VAG specialist. You’ll need to do some digging through reviews online to see if they’re any good or not but this is one firm that is well supported by independent specialist. My home town has three of them, all with good reputations. A newer car however will see some damage to its resale value without a dealer history but it depends on how long you intend on keeping it. I’ve started using one for my wee 2012 Polo TDI and to date they’ve been very good and cheaper than the quite reasonable local VW main dealer where I’ve had good experiences too. Competition is key to good service.

Seeing as you (apparently) haven't, i just Googled "VW specialist in Cheshire". Low and behold, a wide range of options came up, most of which, like i said earlier, with reviews!.

'Links Automotive' is in macclesfield, an independent VW/Audi specialist with a rating of 5/5 over 45 reviews.

'The German car specialist' is in Runcorn, it has a rating of 4.9/5 over 25 reviews.

'Wirral car care' is an independent VAG specialist with a rating of 4.8/5 over 45 reviews.

'David Paul of Warrington', seems to be a BMW, Mini, Audi and VW specialist, 4.7/5 over 88 reviews.

There are more, but you get the picture, this isn't difficult information to come by!.

Best thing to do if you are a fan of the brand is to join an owners forum then ask which specialist they would use in your area. Go by recommendation, word of mouth etc. There is always usually one or two good specialists that members will recommend in a specific area. It’s often worth travelling a few miles to get good service.

Word of mouth is why I have asked on a forum rather than just Googled it. People here might be able to give further insight or search tips to help avoid pitfalls. I've learned a lot from this forum (so much more than just Googling) and I highly value its content and users' input.

Both of the VW indie specialists in my area advertise that they have all the VW software etc and will even update your VW online service history.

I think VW specialists are relatively common and, as others have said, just find the best for you.

A benefit of going the indie route is that they will only charge for what they have done. A VW main dealer major service includes plugs, air and pollen filters if required. If they are not required it's basically an oil service and the cost is the same (about £350 from memory)!

I will keep to the main dealer until my Golf is three years old then off to a specialist indie. I will lose goodwill but at least I won't get charged premium prices.

Hi all. Thanks for the advice.

After the £700+/- fix I drove my car home yesterday. Within 24 hours the car has broken down again. This time the problem actually feels worse. Unfortunately there is unlikely to be a refund for the unnecessary work carried out. I will contact Customer Services tomorrow to escalate the issue. I'm due in work at 8 am.

Volkswagen Golf - Finding a Good Independent Garage? - Avant

What's actually wrong with it? Is it the same problem as before? If so, surely the dealer shouldn't charge you again.

Suspected clutch master cylinder fault. However, it evidently wasn't so perhaps the slave cylinder?

Volkswagen Golf - Finding a Good Independent Garage? - badbusdriver

Wow, if nothing else, this thread is a glowing indictment of just why 'Cobbles' should NOT buy her OH's Golf!.

Volkswagen Golf - Finding a Good Independent Garage? - Radam87

Is that the subject of another thread?

Volkswagen Golf - Finding a Good Independent Garage? - Avant

Yes it is. Just look down the page for a thread starting 'VW Golf GTD'. 'Cobbles' who started the thread might find your views interesting.

You don't say what engine your's is fitted with. but there are two types of clutch slave cylinder fitted.

On the smaller petrols it's an external slave (outside the gearbox and easy to change) .

On the bigger petrols and diesels it's a concentric slave cylinder which is inside the bellhousing and even though the part is cheap it's a big labour cost and you will probably need to change the rest of the clutch as it's probably been contaminated with brake/clutch fluid - it's also false economy not to replace whiltst you have the gearbox off the car.

PS - frequently garges replace the master cylinder first as it should be a fairly cheap job (er yours wasn't) - just in case this is the issue -but it's usually the unreliable concentric slave cylinder, also unreliable on other car makes! The next bit is an expensive job - time to move away from the main dealer me thinks if that is what they charged for the master cylinder replacement - wow!!! As it is clutch, I doubt you'll get very far with customer services. Beware the next hit of a few hundred pounds just for diagnostic charge!

Look out for dripping brake/clutch fluid underneath from the base of the gearbox bellhousing.
