2014 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 SRi Sports Tourer - Astra J 1.6 115 BHP Engine How Good? - A3 A4

Looking for a 2nd estate car, for the other half and the dogs. I have found a 2014 Astra 1.6 SRi 'Sports Tourer with 33k on the clock fro £6.5k from a local main dealership. Looking to steer clear of a diesel

Its a long time since I've had a Vauxhall, always found their engines pretty good. Any advice on the Astra J and this model in particular, it looks pretty good value compared to similar models. I don't want to spend much more.

Any help much appreciated

Seems like a pretty good price, and i believe the 1.6 petrol is pretty reliable. The thing i'd be concerned about is, does the SRI have stiffer suspension?, because that would put me off.

Had a quick look on Autotrader, and with regards to alternatives, the Hyundai i30 and Kia Cee'd (surprisingly) would both be older for the money, and there is the old faithful Focus, but unfortunately, most around this budget would be the 1.0 ecoboost.

Thanks, excellent point about the suspension which I hadn't considered. The OH had an 03 Corsa 1.8 SRi which was horrendous suspension wise, we traded it after a year for a 1.2 SXi which was far superior.

I hope to test drive it over the weekend.

According to HJ's Car by Car review the Astra J SRi does have sports suspension. That may or may not suit your needs.

SRi is just another trim level on the Astra K.

Pretty straightforward things. Well made and pretty robust. The biggest generators of problems are the Fiat designed diesels (1.3,1.6 & 2.0) with the simple 1.4/1.6 n/a petrols largely vice free if looked after.

I’d buy one but take it for a good drive first as they’re not exactly exciting to pilot. The SRi is a bit firmer than the norm but not overly so like the VXR’s. The Estate is very practical and holds its money a bit better into old age as there’s always someone wanting a workhorse.

We have a vague intention to replace our horrible Corsa with an Astra estate. So it will be interesting to see how you get on

Electronic parking brakes were troublesome on early versions so were dropped and are best avoided. Also the 1.6 petrol is belt cam while the 1.4 is chain, as is our Corsa. Our indie says the rattly nature of our Corsa engine is normal so I would go for the 1.6 and haggle for a belt change or price reduction to cover the cost.

There are plenty around so you can afford to be picky but 5 year old cars will be rarer at main dealers so it could be a good one if they are retailing it rather than sending to auction.
