best way to remove a deepish scratch - barney100

Got a scratch on my car about 2" long you can get a fingernail in. I've tried the wax pencil thing and all sorts of colour matched polish and an electric polisher to no avail. Anything out there that works?

ask at a local bodyshop.. Mine was a ding/broken paint just above the fold line at the bottom of the tailgate and £85 got it done. It irritated me, so I got it done. ( I am colchester) but maybe someone will have a suggestion close to you if you name your town...

If it's that deep then you aren't gonna get rid of it I'm afraid...not without the help of a bodyshop or such like.

If you can feel it with your nail, it won't polish out. So it depends on what the car is worth, how you feel about it, how noticeable it is etc, as to what to do. If you want a decent job, one of the mobile outfits should fix it to a good standard for a 100 quid give or take. Otherwise some touch up and a very very fine tip artist brush can do a reasonable job, but it will still be noticeable. I have the same dilemma with both of our cars, 7 and 9 years old, so reluctant to spend hundreds on scuffs

And it depends where the scratch is and if its a forgiving colour. I got a deep scratch on my dark metallic grey company Avensis on the rear wheel arch. I successfully built up the scratch with primer and used a touch up kit and did several rubbings down. I wanted to maintain my claim free record as I was going to buy my own car. The repair passed muster when the car was returned.

However the same repair on the bonnet or other light catching panel would stick out like the proverbial sore thumb. There only a professional repair will do.

Generally amateurs make the damage worse I am afraid.

Sounds like a body shop job--however there's just a chance your car colour matches an available wax shoe polish-so try jamming that into the scratch, letting it dry hard, applying some more then lightly polish off. Cost £1 or £2 max.

The expensive colour car waxes (£8.99)from accessory shops will not work with a task like yours.

Had a go at repairing a light scratch with no success. Took it to a dent/scratch repair specialist & as soon as they observed the evidence of my DIY attempt claimed I had ruined their ability to make a proper repair. Apparently get scratches sorted professionally or be prepared to live with your own efforts but not both.

Minute circular stone chips can be DIY repaired to a near professional finish especially on horizontal surfaces such as the bonnet. I use a fine pointed artistes brush & with a magnifying glass attached to my spectacles slowly build up blobs of paint deposited within what is effectively a crater. Given the frequencies of such stone rash the result is cost effective & the repairs difficult to spot unless right up close.

Is the base colour still there within the scratch? If so, you could fill with a clear lacqeur (clear nail varnish will actually work too) and then sand down with the various grades of wet and dry sandpaper, try to keep it localised to where the scratch is and then a polishing compound such as T cut to finish it.
