My wife's clio with 22k on when washed last week is showing minute rust spots on the white paint.

Took it to the dealer and they say its from fallout in the atmosphere or industry.

We live in the countryside of the lake district.

On closer inspection the spots are not just on the roof but Bonnet, Bootlid and low down in the doors.

Has anyone else experienced this

Also the interior carpet has worn by the clutch pedal what is the life expectancy???

My 2012 white VW Polo suffers this occasionally. A quick but hard dab of polish on the spot usually sees it away. White cars show up rust spots more than other colours so it’ll need a wee polish to protect it every so often.

A long time ago i worked at a Peugeot dealer in Wigan, it was near a railway line, and we constantly had this due to tiny flakes of metal flying off. It couls also happen if the car was in a body repair shop near a car where a grinder was being used, but that would be very careless on behalf of the garage. As SLO says, a polish should sort it out initially, but i'd give some thought to replacing the car in the not too distant future, as once it starts, it is likely to come back (Also seeing as the 0.9 TCE isn't known for being that reliable).

As for the carpet, surely it is your wifes foot which has caused the wear in the carpet, i wouldn't have thought the clutch pedal would touch it?. Only thing i can think of is to get some tailored mats to hide the wear and prevent further deterioration.

Are you sure it is rust spots. My cars bonnet and roof was covered in like baked on insect droppings or sap. Normal polishing would not remove them and I had to resort to very carefully scraping the spots and then polishing.

Can I respectfully suggest you do not "polish them off" you can buy a solution to actually wash fall out off based on oxalic acid, works a treat providing you don't let it dry on.

Polish is used to "correct" paint defects rather than remove surface contaminant's.

Sorry but I'im a bit of saddo when it comes to car cleaning!

keeping the paint well waxed will help to stop the stuff sticking.

Had this on a Focus we bought, think the car had been parked under a tree, probably a Sycamore. The garage offered to buff it out but I was worried about a 16 year old yoof with a power tool doing more damage. The internet suggested clay bar and further research revealed that Hafords sold Meguairs as a kit with their suggested lubricant for about £15 at the time.

I was not really convinced but bought a kit and spent about 3 hours doing the affected areas (basically anything that pointed to the sky). Brilliant result, smooth as a baby's bottom with no swirls or scratches.

I had the same experience on a white Volvo years ago. It came off the French car train covered in little spots that were the devil to get off. Seems they are indeed metallic dust coming off the train brakes . The rail company was giving free car wash tokens to anyone who stuck around to complain.
