Reliable sporty car under 10k - epson661
Twenty two year old looking for an upgrade from my 1.2L 2009 Ford Fiesta. The fiesta has served me wellbut looking for something a bit quicker and fun to drive whilst being reliable for my duly commute to work (40 miles round trip). I’ve got a budget of 10k and looking for something that’s quick but nothing too fast due to my age and insurance costs, (anything between 6.5-8seconds would be superb). As my fiesta has had no problems so far, don’t really want to be upgrading to something that is unreliable as I will be doing 10-15k a year with it. Preferably manual gearbox, and not too fussed about petrol or diesel. Looking to buy used, as not really sure about how PCP Or lease deals really work! Any help or guidance appreciated.

I would suggest you check your insurance costs first. You may find it excessive to upgrade to something sporty or quicker.

Something like this Seat Leon could fit the bill depending on insurance cost,

You can also get the same engine in the smaller Ibiza,

Of that two, i'd favour the Leon, but not neccessarily in that spec as i've read that the ride is pretty harsh on bigger wheels.

Coming from a Fiesta, the ST is also well within budget,

Also, and a bit more obscure, the Hyundai i30 and Kia Cee'd are both available with 1.6 turbo petrol power,

Agree totally. Don’t waste any time looking before getting a few quotes. You may find it cripplingly expensive just now. Possibly you might manage an upgrade to something in between like a Suzuki Swift Sport however.

Good call on the Suzuki SLO, cracking little car, and while it is outside the OP's desired sub 8 seconds 0-60 time, it isn't by much at 8.7 srconds. That £10k budget would get you into one of the last of the n/a models (the current model uses a 1.4 turbo), such as this 2017 car with under 9k miles,

Reliable sporty car under 10k - Engineer Andy

A former colleague of mine (around the same age) had a similar 'itch' to get rid of his (older) 1.4 Fiesta (90hp) because he wanted something 'faster' but better on mpg. I actually found out why he was getting bad mpg - he was gunning it at 90mph down the A1 to work.

Needless to say, a short time later he drove into the back of a van coming out of our company car park, wrote his car off (not broke, just too expensive to fix, given it was over 10yo) and 'upgraded' with his insurance money to a Megane (I think) TD for about £6k - £7k. Of course, that means he spent several thousand buying it and subsequently will have to endure a big bump in his annual premiums, all because he wanted to drive a lot faster and didn't pay attention.

Just a salutory tale to our OP to think very carefully before going down this path, as (as SLO and elekie&a/c doctor says) even without a claim, the insurance at their age will be VERY expensive even if they have a few years no claims behind them, and just one fault claim could make the next premium unaffordable, meaning they'd have to seel the car immediately, and probably well below market value, losing a lot in the process.

OP - Be careful. I'd personally waut until you're 25 before thinking about a change. premiums should then start to drop more, especially if you stay claim free.
