I was insured for years through Aviva and on renewal queried premium and was informed underwriters had loaded because of my age-81years.
Tried LV and saved over £300 and yet I am still 81!

Re: More, for less

The OP should, if they have any, put one of their children on their policy as a named driver - for emergency purposes in case the only main driver is taken ill and needs someone to drive the car (and them) home.

This has the added benefit of reducing the premium, as long as the person added has a excellent claims history from the last 5 years and is an experienced driver. Not lying at all, just common sense.

Braking Bad.

The best parking brake designs of all are drum inside disc, where the rear disc brake does not provide the parking brake, a completely separate system of hand lever operated cables applies traditional brake shoes which clamp to drum, the drum is part of the rear brake disc, imagine a boater hat and you have the basic disc/drum design.

Standard normal person strength is more than enough to operate this type of parking brake, most of which have simple manual adjusters for the brake shoes, leaving the rear discs to be simple affairs, as simple and trouble free as the usual front disc brakes.

Most good quality larger car designs that avoid the idiotic and pointless EPB have this design, it wasn't ever broken so didn't need fixing.

The irony of putting the blame on you for using an off road 4x4 in wet muddy conditions, only a dealer service desk could come up with that one and keep a straight face.
Blinding Yellow Ball - IrishNeil

"Blindingly obvious - Now the sun is low in the sky, I am regularly aware of the difficulty I have in seeing clearly with sunlight flashing through hedgerows and the like. It has the effect of temporarily blinding me".

I know how that feels, with early morning starts, the blinking of sunight through hedgerows can be disconcerting.

HJ recommends a baseball cap with a peak, better still, try a sunhat with a brim that can be turned down to front or to each side when required.

Craghoppers Nosilife is an excellent quality hat, while I'm sure there are other brands available.

As an aside, Mini have both a front sun viser and a side sun viser for driver, effective but not foolproof.

Blinding Yellow Ball - Engineer Andy

I sometimes use my floppy cricket hat to keep the sun off my head - handy for avoiding sunburn as well as shade from bright sunlight.

The effects of low sun can be mitigated a lot.

Clean your windows inside and out properly and don't forget your mirrors, lights shining through clean clear glass is one thing and you can take steps to avoid being blinded by that source, but as light scatters across dirty glass the whole pane of glass causes glare not just the source of the light.

This works just as well at night, don't forget to keep your lights clean as well as the glass.

Re : Blindingly obvious, you can get tinted visors that fit below the standard visors, effectively doubling the size. Though transparent, they effectively prevent glare with a low sun. They are usually advertised in though catalogues that fall out of the Sunday papers.
Please don't wear a hat, it's scientifically proved that the increased pressure of the hat band around the head impairs driving, just think of the worst drivers they wear baseball caps or trilbys.

You have confidently stated "it's scientifically proved that the increased pressure of the hatband around head impairs driving" - that made my day slightly brighter with a smile but worringly curious. Please can you signpost me to this emminent research you allude to, or did it get tossed with the Sunday papers? But then again, I have to agree with your correlational concluson about baseball caps from my own quasi-experimental observations!

Re: Grass Verge

You should also consider adding the Subaru Forester to your list. Proper all wheel drive, great all round visibility and decent ground clearance. A very capable car, both on and off road

Re: I like mine Medium

"We have looked at Peugeot 3008, Mazda CX5, Skoda Karoq among others - and are put off by the aesthetics of MPVs. "

So what is more important is not the comfort or safety of his children but the aesthetics. Dear oh dear, no wonder Range Rovers sell well with these idiots on the road.
