Skoda Fabia Mk2 - Interior air quality less good when heater is on... - Starman999

I've previously posted here about my Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and how the tiniest hint of 'engine fumes' getting into the cabin can make me very ill.

I'm presently in the market for a used car but I must say that finding an oldish car that doesn't affect me is proving quite a challenge (well, I HAVE actually found 3 cars that I was fine in, recently, but which I had to reject for other reasons). I'm not just sensitive to car fumes btw but also to various other sorts of airborne stuff. It's quite a pain...

Anyway, in the course of my car-hunting I've noticed that Skoda Fabia Mk 2s appear a good bet for me insofar as the route of air through the vents (by the windscreen) appears totally isolated from the engine, hopefully meaning that any smells from the engine just cannot get into the cabin. And indeed I've kinda verified that no engine fumes were getting into two Fabias that I viewed (How? Both of these cars had really obviously smelly engines but not a hint of that was evident inside to my very sensitive nose!).

However in one of those two Fabias, I still experienced a reaction of sorts (only) when I set the heater to hot (with recirculation and aircon both OFF). I have noticed exactly the 'same-feeling' response in many, many other cars when turning on the heater, so I'm eager to get to the bettom of what's going on.

I'm wondering if someone in the know could hazard an educated guess as to WHAT exactly might be affecting me, given that the culprit doesn't seem to be engine fumes. Is there anything en route from the exterior air inlet to the eventual hot air outlet in the cabin that could cause slightly less than perfect air, and which could perhaps be resolved by cleaning or replacement? (I've read of 'smelly aircon' issues being resolved by cleaning...).

Hope this makes some sort of sense and that someone might be able to provide some insight. Thanks!

The way I see this is as follows. All cars use a similar air intake system via the plenum chamber ,where the wiper mechanism is located. Air is then is sucked into the Hvac system by the blower motor. A pollen filter is fitted either before or after the motor. Air is then distributed through the ducting system. This could be where your problem arises. The plastic ducting gives off a vapour when cooled and heated. notice the dirty film that collects on the inside of the windscreen. Have you tried any Mercedes models.? some are fitted with a charcoal type cabin filter that may help your problem.

I don't mean to pry but how do you get on in your day to day life with such a condition? Do you wear a mask when outside?

I am honestly not trying to offend bit maybe that could be the answer when in a car.. just a thought

It can be a big deal but it seems to be only a limited number of chemicals that I'm affected by so mostly I get by without much hassle. I did buy an expensive mask but I reacted badly to that mask!

This makes a lot of sense. Thank you. And of course when anything gets hot it's more prone to off-gas (to the tiny extent that may affect me) so I can hopefully mitigate effects by never running the heater at anything hotter than 'warm'.

I recently tried a Fiesta, which i really didn't want to buy as it was generally 'dodgy' and had an obviously fake service history, but I experienced no ill effects at all in that car! I wonder if different cars use different grades of plastic, some being more volatile than others?! I may try another Fiesta!

I will be getting a Mann Frecious carbon activated filter for whatever car i end up with.

Would there be any reason to think that replacing the plastic ducting you mentioned might help?

My post regarding the Nissan Cube and also an in-car air purifier seems to have been removed too, not sure why?

Yes I don't know why your comment would have been deleted as it was entirely helpful and constructive. Still, I have a note of that air purifier and remember what you wrote about the Cube.

Thank you. I must confess I didn't see the remark by andrew bairsto so am curious as to what he wrote!! But still, it's probably for the best it was deleted!

Starman - it was the post accusing you of beng a wind-up, which you rightly contradicted.

BBD's post is still visible to me and not hidden in any way, but here it is again in case anyone else can't find it.

"!Recently I was reading about the Nissan Cube, not the (3rd gen) versions sold officially in the UK, the 2nd generation (2002-2008) which would end up in the UK as a 'grey import'. Anyway, there was a built in 'ion clean air purifying system' available, probably as an optional extra. Not sure how to find out if one you looked at had this or not, but if you were interested, getting in touch with some of the numerous Japanese import specialists would be a good place to start.

"Also, and i think i may have mentioned this on a previous post of yours, unless someone else was posting with the same condition, but you can buy air purifiers to put in a car. I just Googled 'air purifier for car' and this is the top link, airbubbl.com/?gclid=CjwKCAiA2fjjBRAjEiwAuewS_f-WnR...E"

Even when the air intake is through vents before the windscreen it could still be polluted with fumes if the rubber seal between the plenum top and the bonnet is damaged or weak as pollutants would be pushed thorugh by the air taken in through the cars front grille and then possibly out of the top of the bonnet back into the fresh air intake. Simple seal to change though,
