Been running a Niro PHEV for some six months now and am very pleased with it. Previously had a VW Golf V11 but felt that I needed a more upright seating position due to back problems. The Niro proved a good choice as no discomfort experienced on recent 250 mile journey.

Tried various cars and found Niro was the one that suited my needs best. With most of my driving being short trips went for plug in (might not suit most) and, living in Scotland have the advantage of many free charging points compliments of Scottish Government thus much of running in electric mode.

Drawbacks on Niro.

Do not like the foot operated handbrake, getting used to it but do not like it. Friend who drives Mobility car with hand controls loves Niro but has to reject it due to this feature.

Boot on PHEV is adequate but smaller than on Hybrid version and does not have room for spare wheel unless on boot floor. Still manage to get golf clubs and trolley in without folding rear seats/

Fuel consumption has fallen heavily in last few weeks due to low temperatures. PHEV needs petrol engine running to use heater for demisting etc and consumption now down to low 70s, was up nearer 90s in summer.

Watch out for pedestrians in car parks. Goes into electric mode at low speed and people walk out in front as they don't hear you. They rely on ears and do not look!

I take it that the work was all done at no expense under the 7 year warranty. Any reason why not to keep it going - nice new parts for free, and the reason why people buy KIAs in the first place, or so I thought.

Work is indeed under warranty, but they got it at 08.30 this morning, no report tonight, parts required so need to be ordered, software reset and update needed.

For some reason set everything to metric and fuel calculated at 383 kilometres remaining and obviously need to empty tank.

Dealer response was superb by the way.

The itch is back with a vengeance...

Speaking of Honda, it's going to be interesting to see how the newer models fare as they age.

Son just sold their 13 plate 38k mile CRV before they emigrated, in the last 5 months the aircon compressor failed, thankfully under Honda extended warranty as circa £1500 job, apparently this is a regular fault but would no doubt be cheaper at an indy, who can't supply any less reliable a unit IMHO.

3 weeks before they left a rear wheel bearing started rumbling, would have taken too long to get it fixed via the warranty (don't like the sound of that, so much for Honda extended warranty), so had to stump up themselves circa £400 because well he's an honourable chap and wouldn't have sold it to his previous work mate knowing there was a problem.

This on a FSH well cared for vehicle without towbar or any signs of abuse, rather worrying a 5 year old low mileage vehicle from this marque would have cost up to £2000 for these repairs, and what next one wonders.

I hope this isn't a sign Honda are going the same way as some German marques, riding on the solid reputations of the previous era, going to be watching with interest.

Got no axe to grind and have had a Jazz from new that gave me no trouble at all (wish I hadn't sold it and bought a new Hyuudai i10 with a juddering clutch instead - not a good move).

However it has long surprised me that the CRV has always had a long list of negatives on HJ's review section. I just counted 42 negs. Although, having said that, his list of negatives regarding the Yeti is much the same yet mine has (apart from the DSG recall under warranty) been faultless.

Don't panic yet, the breakdown could be something as simple as a lose battery or alternator terminal - or a duff cell in the battery. Modern electronics do not like spiky power supplies.

What was the price they offered you on a Carens 1.6 2?

Bit disappointed you didn't have the Niro for longer though .... would have been good to have got some more thoughts on it. Can you remember what model it was?

If it were to be the chosen replacement for the Yeti I'd be back to to the question of how to fund it - presumably I'd trade the Yeti in then would have to decide PCP, lease or cash - or PCP then settle the same week?

Anyway, look forward to seeing what replaces the Venga.

Niro does not have spare wheel, instead has "whippy cream" kit, useless if you have blow out, also renders tyre useless and can cost extra to clean gunge off rim.Spare wheel kit available from The Wheel Shop, £140 for 16" whee and skinny tyre, 1500kg jack and wheel brace.
