Its that time of the year again. 1st sign of any mist and the muppets put the rear fogs on. Even worse on a motorway dual carriageway when you are following someone in a long line of traffic and they insist on leaving the fogs lights on. A Solution would be for manufacturers to link the use of the fog lights to a speed limiter meaning the vehicle can only travel at a maximum of say 50mph when the rear fog lights are on. This would encourage people to drive at a safer speed when you need them on and switch them off when you dont

Not simples. Wouldn't the people who want to do 50+ in fog just turn them off?

I agree they are a pain, along with stupidly bright brake lights, headlamps and over-bright reflective direction signs.

Yeah the would switch them off. It doesn't stop muppets driving excessively fast when there is real fog or very heavy rain but for the most time when fog lights are switched on its un necessary. The should only be activated when visibility drops below 100m. Put them on if required but as soon as conditions improve switch them off. This approach linking it to the speed of the vehicle would encourage people who put them on the first day theirs mist and leave them on until March to switch them off and avoid dazzling everyone else un-necessarily

It's just as bad as, probably the same muppets, with people sitting at the traffic lights holding the car on the footbrake so absolutely dazzling the person in the car behind them with their brake lights. If I'm caught in that position I usually put my headlamps on main beam and hope they may just get the message!

Haven't they got a handbrake that works??!!!

I'm not sure about other makes, but our Handa Jazz CVT has stop start. This only works in drive with your foot on the brake. Bad design?, possibly, but the folks behind the wheel didn't design the car, as far as they are concerned, they are doing their bit for air quality.

Re foglights, i have a simple system, if i can clearly see the car in front of me (traveling at a normal speed and a safe distance), they stay off.

Don't assume the driver in front is being malevolent. My car keeps the brake lights lit by design. Not they way I'd have designed it!

Goes back a long way that does, they usually only work on dipped beam and when you shut the lights off so are the fog lights.

I am not so sure some drivers know what the fog light warning lamps are on the dash so maybe that's why they are never shut off

I've a theory that they switch them on in error for the heated rear window.

I have been known to use mine when the car behind won't dip.

I'm more worried about safety than annoyance myself.

Came close to running into the rear of a vehicle without a rear foglight today.

And yes, later on I followed someone who'd forgotten to turn their foglight off.

most cars the rear fog light automatically turns off when the lights are switched off ... they are a nuisance in clear conditions but very useful when it's foggy, I wish there was a way to ensure all road users actually use them in foggy conditions ... and not in good visibility.

As for headlights, I find the H4 / H7 halogen headlamps to be less effective than the Xemons I had on previous car, or LED headlights on present car. Of course proper alignment is essential (not too low or forward vision is compromised), what I detest are these fairy lights LED day running lamps, they are almost blinding at night and if I wanted to be in a fairground I wouldn't be driving a car.

Given that so many cars now have automatic main beam dipping to avoid dazzling a car in front, the technology must surely exist to automatically switch off rear foglights when a car following from behind reaches a certain distance and stops or slows to a certain speed. If so, the last car in a queue of traffic would still show a rear foglight but the other queuing cars - which do not need RFLs on - would only have tail lights on, which is all that is needed in a queue of traffic. It strikes me that similar thinking could be applied to brake lights, but until this becomes reality I swing the sun visor down to block out the "red mist."

Saw this on the way in the morning, it was barely even misty yet the audi in front of me had their fog lights on, the irony was that they were tailgating the car in front of them, so their attitude to safe driving seems a bit confused!

I can't honestly remember the last time I saw fog, even mist is fairly rare and even rarer is it where I would say normal lights aren't sufficient.
