Audi A4 2009 2.0TDI CR - 6spd manual - Slow start performance - s4nj

Hi,

I've owned this car a few mionths. It's on 100k miles.

However, light bugbear is the 0-60 from standing start - seems very slow through gears 1-3? Quoted 0-60 is 8 seconds, performance seems like 10 seconds.

No smoke. Regularly serviced and get good MPG etc... no warning lights.

Any ideas ?

Would carbon cleaning help (Terraclean)?

Thanks

SM

Unplug the Mass Air Flow sensor and see if it improves. If it does you need a new one.

The MAF sensor measures the volume of air passing through the air intake. Over time they get bombarded with dust and dirt particles which coats the sensor and prevents it from measuring accurately. The ECM cannot know it's coated, but it measures a low volume of air and so it thinks the engine under light load and fuels it accordingly. The result is low performance. When the sensor is unplugged the ECM can't read airflow at all, and so it assumes a fixed value. Note though you will generate a fault code when the engine is running with the sensor unplugged.

If you have access to VCDS you can check the actual airflow against the ECM's expected airflow. As a general rule the peak airflow in mg/str should be 0.8 of the engine BHP. Eg, a 150BHP engine should have peak airflow of 120 mg/str.

Thank you for the comprehensive response. I will go to my local garage and get this checked out and report back.

Between family members we have 4 cars with this engine but at different ages.

2 x 2008, 2009 & 2012.

Due to throttle valve fault codes on 2 of them i've replaced one throttle valve & cleaned another 2.

All 3 had signifficant carbon build-up around the EGR valve which sits immediately above the throttle valve, this crud makes it's way down to the throttle valve due to gravity & eventually prevents it working properly.

On the 2012 engine which has only 82k, the restriction was at least 50%.

So I would say at your mileage it would be worth getting the EGR/throttle valve cleaned.

They are both removed with the same 3 bolts so a fairly easy job at the front of the engine.

Thanks Dieselnut for the feedback.

I will get this checked at the garage at the same time.

I seem to recall that quoted 0-60 times are based on professional test drivers using full power, with no worries about smoking tyres off the line or breaking clutches or transmissions.

If it is your car and you will pay the bills you naturally may be more sympathetic, so if you manage 0-60 in 10 seconds this may be a perfectly normal performance.
