Ford Focus 1.6TD reg 2009 - Best in-tank diesel system cleaner - tdc

Hi,

A mate has 2009 150,000 mile Focus 1.6 TD and he reckons fuel consumption is dropping by the day.

I asked him today what the readout was giving and he said it has been slowly dropping for a fortnight, including after filthy air filter change a few days ago,now below 60mpg.

I thought 60mpg was flippin` good.

No external leaks.MOT imminent,so can anyone recommend the best fuel system cleaner that`ll worked on the injectors safely,so it stands a chance on emissions pass? It`s not smoking or using oil.

Cheers.

Wynns Diesel Emissions Reducer any good?

We had a 1.6 Focus TDCi for 5 years and I can tell you that 60 mpg is actually impossible. Best we ever saw was about 58 mpg on a 430 mile Scotland trip. Over a year it averaged out at about 45 mpg.

If his figures are from the dash display get him to check the mpg using pen and paper, those dash displays are programmed to lie.

Also consider if its the 110 PS version it will have a DPF and if that is at the end of its life it will affect the mpg.

Many people use a can of Forte fuel treatment just before the MOT, well regarded products.

I and several others on this site use Millers Diesel treatment every fill.

Some on this site call such products snake oil, you pays your money and takes your chances.

Hope the car in question gets regular oil changes, and if the air filter has been left for ages that suggests a new fuel filter might pay dividends, could the worsening fuel consumption be more brake related one wonders, again bearing in mind the air filter.

Diesel fuel injectors don't so much get blocked, they get worn, along with everything else. The nozzles wear with age due to the high pressure they cope with, up to 30,000psi and sometimes more. Question is would you want to spend several hundred pounds to replace them on a 9 year old car hoping to gain a few mpg? And that's even if you do gain anything. Just accept it is an old car now.

So worth spending £10 on a fuel additive - if it works it saves several £100s. if it doesn't it's only a tenner.

Millers Diesel Eco max for me.

60 mpg is excellent.

Don't forget that MPG reduces as it gets colder. The car has to work harder and bur more fuel in colder, damper weather.

Indeed - I just bought a 4-dose bottle of Redex (it's available in both petrol and diesel variants for the OP) as it was on offer in Halfords for a fiver. Cheaper than the difference between standard fuel and Shell V-Power for just one tankfull.

The Fifth Gear test (on a VW Corrado) showed that on older cars, this sort of injector cleaner gives far more of a positive effect and value for money than swapping out parts, especially expensive ones such as fuel injectors, etc. Better to use this (unless the car requires superfuel as standard) and keep the car well maintained generally.

Thank you all for your great advice. He used a tank additive, put a couple hundred on the clock and she sailed through the MOT.

Have passed all the other info onto him.

Apparently fuel consumption average now reading at 59mpg which still peeves him because it used to be 60 usually, even as high as 62 over an average distance.

No pleasing some people,haha.
