All,
My better half has just acquired a new car, without selling her ageing Fiesta 1.1LX first. The insurance has been transferred over to the new car and her old car will be stored off the road until she manages to sell it.
My question is this...
My insurance allows me to drive other cars on a third party basis. Can I legally drive the Fiesta using my insurance to get it to a garage to MOT it (it runs out at the end of this month and it'd be easier to sell with 12 months ticket on it)?

No. The Fiesta would need to be insured by someone else for your own insurance to cover you. Otherwise a 17yr old could get fully comp on a Mini, register a Ferrari (or similar) in his Dad\'s name and then drive said Ferrari on Third Party insurance.
You may however be able to get one day\'s insraunce from your own company to cover you to drive the Fiesta to and from the testing station.

Er depends, you are insured TP to drive other vehicles NOT OWNED OR KEPT BY YOU. Now some insurance companies assume this to be your spouses car as KEPT BY YOU. You really need to phone the insurance company and ask.

Sorry, but my understanding is that for this "Driving other cars" section of your policy the other car must be insured in it's own right. This it would be, for example, if you were to borrow a car from one of your friends or relatives, as they would obviously have their own car insured.
The best you can probably do is to ask your own insurer to give you one days insurance so that you can legally drive the Fiesta.
Perhaps someone else on the BR might be able to offer another solution, but this is the only one that I can think of.
Good Luck.

Galaxy's solution is good, but it may be cheaper and easier to contact your other half's insurance company and ask them to give a couple of weeks' grace period, either FOC or for a nominal cost.
It is possible that you could drive the car with third party insurance without it being insured by someone else, but it seems unlikely to me. Only your insurance company can answer that.
The example of a 17 year old fully comping a Mini and then driving a Ferrari (or even something like a Golf GTi) TPO wouldn't work because a. Minis are fun in their own right :-) b. would you risk a good car with third party only anyway and c. I don't think any insurance company gives drivers under 25 the right to drive other cars.

When we bought SWMBO's Fabia we asked Churchill to provide a temporary cover note for the Nova so it was insured in case any buyer wanted a test run.
I can't remember if the 3 months temporary cover note for TPF&T cost ~ £13 or £17, anyway not much. So astounded was I that snatched their hand off, and never thought to ask if that price meant could have insured it for a year @ £68! ;-)
One thing I do remember is that initially asked for one months cover, and the gal on the phone said something along the lines of, why not have 3 months its only an extra 50 pence, or something similarly daft.
I really do think things like the original question are just a no brainer. Imagine, on the way to the MOT with dubious insurance you have an accident, unfortunately putting a pedestrian into a wheelchair. Turns out the pedestrian is an eminent brain surgeon with a missus and four kids to support........... I hope you get the picture!
Volvoman has the right idea in one of the other insurance threads. If you are going to do it, then do it correctly.

Thank you all for your pearls of wisdom.
I've called Direct Line who have added the Fiesta to my insurance for a nominal amount.
Safe and Legal - it's the only way to go!!

All - I need your help again!
I've just rung my insurer to add the car on my policy again - and they told me they couldn't do it as the car isn't registered in my name!!! This means they let me drive around uninsured last time as they didn't ask me the golden question "Is the car registered in your name and owned by you?" Which is nice.
So, I am unable to put the car on my policy, my better half won't as her insurer charges £25 for any changes to the policy.
Does anyone have any bright ideas of how I can drive the car legally?
