Citroen C3 Picasso - Weird noise -2 garages failed to locate the source - Tom1991

Been to 2 garages but they failed in locating its source. Comes from somewhere around front driving seat wheel only during acceleration and when the car is going straight.


Please help, this noise just irritates. Any advice or suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thanks

Not to clear but does kind of sound like a knotch in one of the balls in the CV joint.

Faulty wheel bearing.??If a driveshaft bearing it could be worse on corners.. (could be the driveshaft retaining nut is loose)

I would go with the CV joint, does it sound worse with the window open assuming it was closed when recording.?

Yes the window was close at the time of recording...

And yes the wheel nuts are tight. Both mechanics somehow said that cv joint looks good...so u all reckon should I still replace the cv joint then?

Cv joints are risky as they can break up leaving you with no drive, the cage usually cracks and gradually gets bigger/weaker so even though they look good the crack gets to the point they break up

I would at least get another opinion and see what they say, but usually a good mechanic can tell from the sound what's causing it...

I did state a notched ball,

there's 6 in the CV cage and believe me a scar on one of the balls can sound bad.

possible to hear it with the wheel rotating and using a mechanics stethoscope.

only way to be absolute is remove the shaft and dismantle the joint.

Which doesn't take that long but is messy!!!

I just thought I should book an Mot test first with the intention that they will also re-confirm the problem which was discussed here few days ago.

So I had the test today and the car just passed the test without even any advisory. Does the mot test doesnt cover this specific cv and shaft area? Mot was done at Halfords. Cheers

In my limited experience the MoT test involves no 'driving' beyond getting the vehicle onto the rolling road for braking tests etc. The tester may notice your noise while doing that, but if it doesn't affect the testing he may not comment. If you asked him to look for it, that may be different, but the basic message probably is that it doesn't affect roadworthiness, so the car passes - unless there is grease escaping from the boots, for example.
