Reading the July issue of Modern Classics magazine i stumbled upon a small news item which nearly made me choke on my tea!. That of a Ford Escort RS1600i being offered for sale at East Lancashire classics for very nearly £100k!. The car in question has covered 1900 miles from new, but even so.....

Would any backroomers buy this, even if you had the money?

No, but if they know that someone will pay that price, then why not?

There are a lot of wealthy people around now with huge disposable incomes, I've noticed over the last few years how many more private planes are buzzing noisily over my house at weekends, how many more supercars are blasting down the only empty bits of road they can find when possible.

During the world cup, the commentator mentioned one of the footballers being crazy about shoes and had 600 pairs at home.

No doubt someone will buy it, and add it to their collection in a dehumidified warehouse somewhere.

Thanks but I’ll let someone else enjoy this little gem. It does seem a few pence overpriced.

Anyone remember the Harry Enfield sketches where the owner of a shop selling absolute junk called it "Saw you Coming"?

The highlights for me are the 1986 Nova SR with 100k on the clock at £11495 and the 1982 Cortina Ghia for £12995.

Edit: That's interesting, when I clicked back to these cars, they are now sold!

M'mm, either by clicking on them I have now bought them or I smell a large rhodent.

Yeah, and the 1980 Fiesta Supersport @ £18995 (sold!)

Interestingly, H&H recently had a big auction of classics in Buxton, with some nice vintage and modern classics under the hammer.

The prices that most sold for were surprisingly realistic, I thought, and many cars didn't sell at all despite relatively low estimates.

The full catalogue (with pics & prices) is here: online.handh.co.uk/m/view-auctions/catalog/id/87/

For example, the Interceptor III owned by Great Escape classics (which I rented for a weekend in 2014) was estimated at £25 - £30K but didn't sell, despite having had extensive body restoration & respray in 2015, and a full history (engine rebuild 10 years ago, etc etc). That's VERY cheap for an Interceptor with so much documented work.

I suspect there may have been some hidden problems with the Interceptor in question. The price is competitive and i read recently they are on the up (despite the horrific fuel consumption). Here is one for sale on carandclassic.co.uk at rather more,

Ooof, I'd be very surprised if that actually sells for £165,000, even though prices are on the up as you rightly say.

Cropredy Bridge garage (one of the UK's leading Jensen experts) retails restored & historied cars with warranties, starting from around the £60K mark depending on condition etc. They will approach £90K for exceptional cars.

I could kick myself, as I spent a couple of hours at Cropredy Bridge in 2008 and could have bought a gorgeous, restored, historied SP (the hottest variant) for £20K at the time. A decent runner with 12 months MOT was £9K, unbelievably.

I found the consumption wasn't too bad, to be fair: I got 13.5mpg in the 270 miles in the one I rented. If you own one, it's probably the least of your cost worries :-D
