2016 Ford Focus 1,5 TDCi 6 Speed Manual - 2016 Focus 1,5 TDCi Clutch/Transmission/Gearbox - PDL

I have previously owned a 5 gear 1.7TD Escort Estate (up to 120,000 miles) and a Fiesta 1.4 16V Zetec Petrol driven up to 160,000 (first clutch change at 100,000, first exhaust at 130,000).

Just purchased a 20 month old 2016 Ford Focus 1,5 TDCi 6 Speed Manual with 37,000 on the clock. It is supposed to be a motorway car for work.

Drives lovely on the motorway and currently averaging 65 MPG. Plus like putting foot down when required to overtake, loving the Turbo again.

Problem, and I think it is a big one that I did not see coming. I read such bad reviews regarding the semi auto gearbox that I opted for a manual.

10 days into ownership and the car "clunks"/"knocks" in 1st, 2nd and up to 3rd gear change, Plus when putting foot down if I let the revs drop in any gear.

When the car is warming up in the morning this does not happen and when on the motorway it is perfectly fine.

Starting to pick up comments on the internet that this is possibly a known issue with the model/gearbox.

I have it booked in with the Ford dealers next week but think they will try and pull a fast one.

A) Is this a known issue (engine mount, clutch bearing etc) and I can expect this to be fixed under warrenty?

B) Will Ford take the car back if I reject it within 30 days?

I have the same car, 2015 since nearly new and done loads of miles. 65 mpg is good, I rarely get over 60 even on a long run.

Is the clunk / knock definitely a gearbox / clutch thing? Do you actually feel it through the gear lever or clutch pedal?

The reason I ask is that I get a quick lack of power when I put my foot down sometimes. It's like the engine misses momentarily. If I lift of for a few seconds then floor it, it'll happen. Doesn't seem to be from gearbox or clutch, more the engine.

I've looked on forums and it seems quite common. No one seems to have an answer, and mine isn't that bad, so I haven't had it back to the garage.

The main problem for me is the steering. It's awful. Nearly impossible to keep it straight, I have to make constant corrections to keep in lane. My previous Focus seemed to drive itself, no input needed to keep it straight. It was a 2.0 diesel and easily got 60 mpg so you can imagine how dissappointed I am with this cars economy.

In your case, I'd suggest it's the engine software restricting power (and thus 'torque shock') to the DMF/clutch/gearbox to reduce the chance of long-term damage.
