Diesel and Redex - Wee Willie Winkie
Chaps,

Is there an equivalent to Redex for diesel engines? I'm keen to do anything that will look after and prolong my engine life. It's a 2.0Hdi Pug by the way. After advice from all you BR-ers, I'm going to change the oil every 6k to 'grease the wheels' of engine longevity...

Yes there is, diesel injector cleaner.

Honest John recommends Millers Diesel Plus. I've never used it myself though.

Try to consider that diesel fuel is very different to petrol in that petrol is a spirit that breaksdown oil whilst diesel is an oil that itself is very slippery. Probably the main reason why diesels if properly looked after last so long.

I've used Millers myself but wouldn't use it on a ongoing basis. An injector cleaner ever now and then may help.

I tried Redex Diesel on my Citroen ZX without it making the slightest difference to persistent smaoke. When I changed to Millers Dieselclean Plus the smoke disappeared after the second treatment. I have stuck To Honest John's recommendation for Millers ever since as I really DO beleive from my ZX experience that it cleans and keeps clean the engine.

I've used Millers Diesel Plus in my last 4 cars - Passat, Pug 405, Cav and Citroen ZX. Only the Passat was bought from new. Using it on the previous cars seemed to make a difference after a couple of tank fills - smoother running more than anything. Also reading scare stories about low sulphur diesel made me think it worthwhile continuing to use it in the Passat. I've also used their diesel oils and had no related issues in probably around 200,000 miles.

Do Halfords sell Millers, or is it a more specialist product?

www.millersoils.co.uk/ and you can search for local stockists. From experience I can say, from pre website days, that if you actually contact them by phone the person resp. for finding your nearest stockist is.....errr.....geographically challenged. Along the lines of......

"Where are you?"

"XXXXXXX" a place in NE Midlands.

"is that anywhere near Croydon?"

DOH!

I've heard a few good stories about Forte's diesel additive, any comments from anyone?

Steve.
Diesel and Redex - Dave_TD
Yes, Forte seems to make the Octavia pull that little bit harder, a little more quietly, and a little bit more smoothly. It gets added by the main dealer at every 10,000 mile service, they charge me around a tenner for it. I've seen Mercedes dealers offering the exact same treatment for a lot more money!
I've read all the bumf that Forte have printed out in support of their products, it seems to me that enough people have found positive effects to make it worthwhile using. FWIW at just under 150,000 miles the Octavia isn't burning any oil yet, but then I wouldn't expect it to, it's only just run in.

Thanks for the info. A local garage near my brothers swears by it for getting old and worn diesels through their emissions test. I have a look around and try to track some down.

My 1990 LDV200 panel van has a perkins 2ltr diesel. Millers halved smoke and noise emission. Would not pass MOT smoke test without it.

Andrew,

There are still lots of vehicles on the road powered by the Perkins Prima engine and I doubt if they all need additives to get them through the MoT test. Perhaps your engine has a fuelling fault?
Diesel and Redex - Andrew Hamilton
None that I know. All LDV vans with perkins engines were well known for smoke and noise whether 200 or the bigger 400. I get 8.3-10.3 miles/litre depending on journey type (About 40mpg) so no complaints. I even bought sound proofing material for under the bonnet but did not bother after adding Millers. The PO only bought LDV vans as they were cheap new. I bought 4 years old at auction for about £2000 because no builders want them. Everyone loves Transits or Mercedes Sprinter.

I agree about the noise and smoke being well known. Not just in the LDV vans though -- noise and smoke were characteristic of the 2.0 litre engines even when new. Probably a price worth paying for the outstanding economy by the standards of the day (the engine was designed c.1984).

Sorry to butt in Dizzy but you've got to mention the fact that generally they start if you so much as look at the key, I'd have thought that in mild weather you could disconnect the 'plugs and they'd still go, not like my 405!

glowplug - if you haven't found this yet, try an ATS place if they do MoTs. The one here keeps Forte on the shelf as an immediate cure for diesels failing on emissions.

Thanks for the tip. I'll call the local branch and see what they have.

I use Wynns Diesel Injector Cleaner, it smells horrible so it must be good!! Seriously I shove a bottle in the tank when i can remember, about every six months. Seems to do the trick.
