Hi There,

I am just about to buy a 2010 Audi S4 Avant B8 with 80,000 miles on the clock.

Is there anything I need to know about things that go wrong on these cars at this age?

1001 things can go wrong on a highly complex older performance car like this. Do not buy if you’re on a limited to moderate budget! This cost £50k upwards new, it has running costs in line with this figure and not the supermini price tag it’ll have now.

Be very wary, buy only with a full main dealer history and verify that it’s genuine by contacting the dealer who’s stamped the book. Don’t use the number in the book, google it yourself and call. High performance cars like this are almost unsellable with patchy or no history so it’s very common for them to be faked.

Remember also that any number of cripplingly costly problems will be lurking at this age and mileage so don’t expect to run this as if it was a Golf GTi or a Focus ST. A rattling timing chain for example will be an engine out job and well into 4 figures and then there’s DMF that breaks up, turbo seals and bearings that fail In fact if it were me I’d sooner have a much younger hot hatch instead and enjoy driving it without worrying about a fault bankrupting you.

I had a similar discussion with a good friend a while back who was determined to get an E46 M3 BMW. He ignored every bit of advice I offered and sourced a slightly ropey M3 SMG and it’s required an engine rebuild and now has the gearbox problems I also warned him about. He’s learned a painful lesson on trying to buy a £50k motor on a working mans budget.

It does have a full Audi dealer history, but I will call them up.

I am also aiming to arrange an RAC inspection.

If I get it the first thing I will do it is get it to my Audi Dealer for a full service. I know one of the mechanics and he always gives me a striaght answer on things. I also have a sum of money set aside to deal with any issues.
