Volvo S40 - MOT administration charge - Jenny Wren

I took my car for an MOT yesterday – the garage charged me £49.50 for the test, then a £10 'MOT administration fee' on top. The total bill came to £61.50, with VAT for the admin charge added on.

This doesn't seem very fair to me. Anybody else had this?

If they didn’t tell you about this “admin fee” beforehand then you’ve been cheated and should’ve refused to pay it. If you were told then you should’ve told them thanks but no thanks then booked it in elsewhere. Don’t use this garage again and make sure you spread the word among friends and family. There’s no admin fee applicable on top of an Mot fee but they actual cost of an Mot does vary. This extra cost has put yours at the higher end of that spectrum.

Possible that the garage you took it to didn't actually do the test, and the £10 is the cost to take it to the MOT centre?

My local garage doesn’t do Mot’s either but they still don’t charge for taking it over the road to the testing station. It’s a possibility and would be fair enough if they were upfront about it.

There’s a maximum amount MOT test stations can charge. This depends on the type of vehicle. The maximum fee for a car is £54.85.

You don’t pay VAT on the fee.

I would ask thr garage to refund the overpayment and if they don't like have a chat with VOSA.

Sharp practice.

Ask for the admin fee to be returned and if they refuse, as suggested above, contact the authorities.

Yes, that's quite right. VOSA quote a maximum fee that can be charged for an MOT test and that amount can't be exceeded. There is no VAT.

Should they so wish a testing centre may charge a lower fee as, indeed, many do. They can carry out MOT tests for free should they so wish!

But I've never heard of an "MOT Admin Fee". Could be the charge for taking the car for a test to another garage if the garage themselves aren't an MOT testing station. But, other than that, I can't think of any reason for there being such a fee at all.

I think you need to ask the garage a few questions.

Never heard of such a fee....and I wouldn't pay one either.

My garage doesn't "do" MOT's and they simply take my vehicle to another garage with whom they have an "arrangement" that does..they charge NO fee for that.

Bad practice IMO.

My brother in law works for a local tyre fitting company (in fact he's been there 30+years and has just taken over from the owner who is in poor health). They don't do MOTs but will take a car to their preferred local testing station (about a 2 mile round trip) for the MOT.

They do charge an admin fee which I presume just about covers their time to drive the car there and back. However, they are upfront about it and don't just slap it on their invoice without prior notice.

I can beat that admin charge.

The French controle technique station that we use, because it's handy, actually charges us an extra €7.50 for testing a vehicle with the steering wheel on the right hand side.

And it's written up on the tarrif notice in the office.

The cheeky so and so.

Smacks of the "admin fee" often added to financial deals, interesting to note that VAT was charged on the admin fee whereas the MOT is outsidfe the scope for VAT

Did they find any work needs doing, some testing stations discount the MOT then find essential repairs that need to be undertaken before they can issue the pass certificate!

If your small independent mechanic does not do MOTs then you have to pay for time taken, including waiting, if you want it done when he services car. The advantage is that MOT test station knows that they will not get any work from a fail, a mechanic is better able to argue a marginal opinion and if they unreasonably fail then the MOT station will lose business.

I nearly got a fail for not having rubbers on pedals but these were drilled aluminium pedals that had never had rubbers and were standard on model not even aftermarket. He relented, I think that he realised that he might be wrong, I did not have to threaten to report him to VOSPA but would I have a claim for costs resulting from an incorrect failure if I spent money rectifying or hiring a car? I guess car would still be illegal to drive even if reason for failure was wrong: and this is a matter of fact not opinion as some things are on MOT.
