05 Citroen Xsara Picasso - 05 Citroen Xsara Picasso Gearbox Issue - Ds310590

Hi,

I'm posting this on behalf of my dad so bear with me.

We recently bought a car and we seem to be having some gearbox trouble.

There's a horrible grinding noise in gear in every gear but the 5th and it's tough changing gears.

Can anyone tell me what this might be and more importantly how and how much would it take to fix? Gutted as we really liked the car.

Is it a diesel? If so it’s likely the dual mass flywheel (DMF) is breaking up. Possibly the thrust bearing but without hearing it it’s not possible to be certain. Either way it’s more than the car is worth to fix so you’ll have to really like it to keep it. Bearing in mind also that it’s likely overdue for a timing belt too it’s at that stage in its life where you run it until something major goes wrong. I would avoid diesel at this sort of age/money as any moderate failure will economically write the car off.

Check the CV joints aren’t dry, other than that it’s possibly the diff which is fairly common on these. If it needs a gearbox they’re easy to come by but with a sub £500 value it’d be easier to just buy another one.

Any oil in the gearbox?

It only take 2 L,

So drain off any that is in there and refill.
