Ok - they've done the lead in petrol, then the plant food gas, then NOX, then diesel particulates. All have been good for inventing new taxes for governments to fill their coffers.

Next it's pollution from tyres.

Looked at objectively, tyres are a terrible waste of resources. They are binned when something like 1% has been 'used' - i.e. turned into loose dirt on the roads. Some (not many I guess, at least for cars) get remoulded, quite a few end up on farmers' muck-heaps, and some get ground up to make stuff for kids to fall onto in the playground.

As a mixture of rubber and plastic (possibly steel) reinforcement they are not an ideal fuel for power stations. At least I don't junk mine when they are only down to 3mm ... :-(

IIRC, used tyres were being used to create artificial reefs (to encourage fish) not that long ago!

Then it will be pollution from brake dust, then pollution from power stations to power electric cars, not that any of that cash will help reduce pollution as it will only get worse....as for clean air, that will never happen

I have a theory - if you put a caveman in to todays environment, he would become ill very quickly. Our bodies have got used to absorbing pollution over hundreds of years, particularly since the industrial revolution.

There would be a lot of pitfalls being a caveman, but if I had a time machine I would like to go back to that time and breathe the air, just for a few minutes.

I always notice how cheerful and alert people become when there is a north wind blowing - cleaner air.

It's funny how they never pick on the real issue behind every major problem facing mankind - the uncontrolled human population explosion. But of course it's not nasty white westerners doing that so "they" keep schtum.

A man after my own heart. The sad thing is that although we are the only species with the ability to manage our own numbers, today's correct politics mean that the rights of the individual to procreate may not be hampered in any way - in fact the system does all it can to help.

Problem is, even if everyone were to focus on the bigger picture, it would need a generation or two to take effect.

Indeed, our species is heading for a downfall, due to sheer unsustainable numbers, unfortunately political gerrymandering for short term power an wealth gain means those of the general population in countries who have maintained sensible progression are as doomed as the rest.

The coming centuries are not going to be the utopia the entitled have come to believe will be.

They know we are heading for destruction thats why some are doing a lot of research into going to Mars and possibly using the moon as a base

I am of the opinion it will happen fairly soon, the theory of making an atmosphere on Mars will take longer but see no reason why it wont happen, though I doubt I will see it happen unfortunately, but I cannot see us remaining on earth too much longer for obvious reasons...

And assuming we did manage to inhabit Mars, what would we do there? The same no doubt.

We're not making much impact on the planet itself, but we're giving ourselves enough rope to hang ourselves in terms of our own survival. The planet has been through extremely hostile conditions over it's 4.5 billion years, where only the toughest organisms can exist. Vegetation would soon come back if we disappeared, which would then influence the atmosphere, and the life that we've made almost extinct would return. All assuming another mass extinction event doesn't happen.

Over geological time we hardly register as a species. It's a shame that we can't live more sustainable lives while we exist here.

This thread reminds me of the research done in NZ a few years ago which found that the methane gas emitted from a single cow (from both ends) in one day was enough to power a small truck for 25 miles.

You can look at this as either a great untapped resource or yet another source of pollution.

So you like the smell of raw excrement and rotting heaps of bone (even worse would be shellfish) not to mention woodsmoke in your hair and urine soaked clothes?

How quaint.

The 'overall' air quality you think would be worse than now? (Not close proximity to living quarters, although I think you know that).
