2001 Citroen C5 diesel estate - boot keeps opening - easypeasy

Hi guys. Just got back in my car and the boot is open. I paked and put central locking on but boot opens. I disconnected battery to see if it was a reset thing but still the same. Any suggestions?

Check the plastic/rubber door opening "paddle switch".These can fail in the on position. Also check the tailgate to body wiring for any shorted/fractured wires.

When car is unlocked the boot switch/paddle won't open the boot itself,so I'm not sure if the switch is knackered. Boot still opens itself when I unlock the car using central locking.

It's not much comfort, I'm afraid, but this used to happen from time to time with my C5 estate of the same vintage (replaced it this month and sad to see it go but the time had come). It never seemed to do it when the car was moving, only when I unlocked the doors or (sometimes) when I opened a door to get in or out. So the 'work around' was simply to check and re-close the tailgate as necessary after opening the driver's door (I usually heard the tailgate unlatch if it was going to do it at all) and then all would be well for the journey. Like I say, probably not quite the answer you would prefer but it's something ...

I replaced the catch unit but it made no difference. Given the age of your car (and my ex-car!) I could only guess at a dodgy connection somewhere in the multiplexed electronics and never tried to get to the bottom of it ... it seemed like something that would drive me mad in the attempt! Sorry.

Read Honest John's car by car review. I told a friend to do that before he purchased a C5. He ignored the advice , because it was cheap, and suffered many of the characteristics.

They are money pits.

Well it seems everything is ok now! Maybe just a sticky latch? Regarding money pits. This is the second C5 Ive had . Last one 200K miles and then this one. I think the car is great! I can get up to 60mpg and big comfy seats. I can even sleep in the back when I'm away hillwalking. Nothing major went wrong in the previous car and so far the same with this.

I'm glad the problem has gone away.

I second your comments about the model! I kept mine for over 15 years, serviced it properly and on time, and had no major replacements other than the expected wear and tear items. DPF lasted 94,000 miles; original EGR, turbo, injectors, clutch etc. still fine when I sold it at 137,000 miles (compare with VAG EA189 diesels, for example). Comfortable, understatedly powerful and a huge load-carrier with the self-levelling suspension. I think C5's were very under-rated and, as used examples are cheap as chips nowadays, one with reasonable history would be worth a punt by anyone looking for some out-of-the ordinary 'bangernomics'. You could get an absolute bargain.
