VW Passat 1.9 tdi - VW Passat 2005 water in driver footwell - Mike wellner

Hi. Apologies for my lack of technical talk.

I have recently found a great deal of water in the driver footwell. There doesn't appear to be any water under the battery, but there was a great deal of gung on either side of the drain away holes by the ECU and the pollen filter.

I have cleared these out but noticed something I'm not sure about. There is a wire by the side of the drain holes attached to a sort of rubber ball... I have attached a picture.

In this picture it appears to be stopping any water dripping through.. but on my car it was pushed down and there was a big gap between the body work and the rubber ball meaning water could flow through easily...

I have pulled it up to create a sort of seal but not sure how long this will last.

Any ideas ??

If this is on the driver side, then I would suspect this is the grommet where the bonnet release cable runs through onto the engine bay.It needs to be sealed against the bulkhead.
